MTV Base Nights peeps Are Hot And You're Not

If you are not attending the monthly MTV Base Nights that has been heating up Rosebank for the past few months, what are you waiting for?

Law Abiding Citizen advanced screening a soaring success

Even though the advanced screening of Law Abiding Citizen, hosted by YEAHBO.DOT.NET, started a bit late because it was screened at the same theatre the Michael Jackson film screened (which overan its time), it was still a sounding success.

The guests started arriving as early as 16:45, amongst the early birds the very dignified and talented Lindelani Mkhize and his wife. I was very humbled and appreciative of their understanding of the late start to the joyous occassion.

Before the beginning of the movie, as usual I took to the mic to give away great goodies, including Bruno hampers, Virgin Active hampers, VIP tickets to MTV Base Night's monthly soiree taking place this coming friday, 06 November 2009, the same day Law Abiding Citizen hit cinemas throughout the country, as well as Jamie Foxx's Ignition CD's (thanks to Sony Music). The giveaway exercise proved very long when guests couldn't find the pieces of papers stuck beneat their seats, but recovered nicely as I got into a nice interaction with the guests, asking them questions related to the movie, as well as related to MTV Base Nights, (where hip hop outfit Jozi will be launching their new alabum), as well as related to YEAHBO.DOT.NET.

Although I had watched the film more than 2 weeks ago, I sat through the second half because I wanted to see the reactions of the guests when my favourite scene was running. As precisely as I had expected, everybody reacted the very same way I did; I chucked as they literally jumped off their seats. Law Abiding Citizen will keep you thrilled for the complete duration of the movie with the suspense, the mystery, the espionage and spycraft elements of the movie, the interesting and unique story, as well as the sterling performances from all the actors involved. The chemistry between the main rivals, Clyde and Eric, played by current Hollywood leading man Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx respectively, is dynamic and superb. F. Gary Gray definitely has another winner in his hands. His directing shows his flair and understanding for the art.

It was great getting positive responses from the guests after the movie. People like Unreleased Records owner Draztik and actor and TV presenter Fezile Makhanya (whom I caught up with after not seeing him for a while) gave me their two cents, and my great friends Melanie Ramjee and Louise Pillay echoed their sentiments via Twitter minutes after seeing the movie. New Jack Swagger On And Poppin' this Thursday

She's the IT girl when you want to know what's happening in the world of entertainment in Mzansi and everywhere else. She is my wifey, :-). She is Melanie Ramjee.

Melanie is celebrating her birthday (you never reveal a lady's age) this coming Thursday. She is also about to embark on her sabbatical this July so she has decided to combine her birthday party with with her farewell party as she is about to travel the world (attending Madiba's 91st birthday concert in New York is one of her stops in her travels) for a few months.

Metro FM turns up the HEAT!

Set to send the crowds fanning themselves with excitement, on Saturday, February 21 at 11h00 the METRO FM Heatwave will blow up steam at Innis Free Park, Sandton with a sizzling line-up of artists.

On the bill will be performances by METRO FM MUSIC AWARD winners Rhythmic Elements (who scooped both the highly-coveted Song of the Year as well as Best Dance Album awards), Best Hip-Hop nominee, JR as well as performances by Brickz, Theo Kgosinkwe, former member of the multi-award-winning Mafikizolo. In addition, METRO FM's very own DJ Fistaz and DJ Nutty will take on the wheels of steel in a live outside broadcast.

Get to know the designer at Audi Joburg Fashion Week : Part 2 - Ifeoma Ayanwu

Our final part of the Audi Joburg Fashion Week designer profile feature looks at the achievements and aspirations of one of Nigeria's groundbreaking female designers, Ifeoma Ayanwu, who designs for her clothing label called Ogodor. Here is her story:

The name Ogodor is fast becoming a household name in Abuja. For those who are not yet acquainted with the name directly would have encountered the beauty, creativity and ingenuity associated with it.

Ogodor is the fashion brand that has taken over the Abuja fashion circuit like wildfire. It is presently a must for all celebrities and happening people in Abuja to have an Ogodor design or accessories in their wardrobe.

According to an Abuja celebrity, who prefers to remain anonymous, “When I receive a special invitation to any function, all that comes to her head is Ogodor”. She adds, “they have perfected the act of dressing you uniquely and you definitely stand out from the crowd”.

Ogodor is owned by Ifeama Ayanwu; a graduate from the University of Jos who has been in the fashion industry for about 10 years but officially launched the Ogodor brand four 4 years ago.

She says the name Ogodor comes from an ancient Igbo word which translate to mean good quality fabric. “We adopted Ogodor because our intention is to project a true Nigerian brand due to our strong belief in Nigeria as one of the best things that has happened to the world”.

Lagos had a feel of her designs is 2006 when she was invited to participate in the Nigeria fashion show. Due to her very enviable and breath taking collections, she was invited back to Lagos to clothe the models at the Nigeria Model Awards in 2006.

Apart from staging her personal show, she has participated in lots of local and international fashion shows, exhibitions and workshops.

Design focus

Tarien Malherbe is a South African designer who creates evolutionary heritage based designs that has an international appeal. She currently designs under the label ‘NON EUROPEAN’ focusing on male and female formal daywear/streetwear.

The label, Non-European, is another way of saying 'Proudly South African' using the language of our previous government - this time to empower and communicate.

Inspiration for this range

This Non-European collection draws on the local education system as a reference point for expressing individual style within the confines of a uniform. The youth of SA have always reinterpreted and challenged their school uniforms, no matter which part of the education system they were in, and this range gives a voice to these ideas.

Design Philosophy

The Non-European brand has an outward focus that aims to empower individuals by creating sustainable job opportunities that utilizes people’s traditional skills and talents.

I love people and I have a heart for the poor or suffering. My greatest joy is to contribute to such people’s lives and to see them grow and prosper. I know my design talent empowers me to make change to individual’s lives on various levels. I therefore enjoy working in the fashion and clothing industry because it is a powerful tool to influence society for the better.

Get to know the designer at Audi Joburg Fashion Week : Part 1 - Thula Sindi

Following on the post about the Audi Joburg Fashion Week published yesterday, we decided to feature profiles of some of the talented designers that will be showcasing their latest collections next week, from 21 to 24 January 2008. The first profile is that of critically acclaimed and successful young designer, Thula Sindi. I witnessed his creativity and flair for fashion when I attended one of his shows at a Fashion Week event last year. Get to know him and his achievements a little bit more.

Thula Sindi matriculated (2001) from the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg and studied at LISOF (London International School of Fashion). His debut was as head designer at Dutch textile company Vlisco - the day after he graduated. He introduced Vlicso's fashion line with a show at South African Fashion Week in 2005, along with fellow designers Malcom Kluk and Palesa Mokubong.

In February 2006 Thula started developing his own range, which hit the runway at SAFW 2006 (a year in which he earned a semi-finalist spot at the Nederburg Rare Fashion Finds Contest). He was also nominated as a finalist in the Marie Claire emerging designer contest in 2007 and 2008.

Thula went on to show a successful collection during Couture Fashion Week in Paris with the assistance of SA Tourism and Dr Precious Moloi- Motsepe. This was followed up with a showing at both the Cape Town and Joburg Fashion Weeks. In November he was nominated as top 10 emerging designers in the FIMA: Afrque est la mode pan African fashion contest which was held in Niamey, Niger.

Thula's Winter 08 collection showcased at Audi Fashion Week in March to much critical acclaim and saw him taking the collection to Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzong in early April of 2008 in association with the Department of Arts and Culture.

Thula showcased his recent collection in Luanda, Angola and in Lagos, Nigeria during the Nigeria's Next Super Model search in September.

Thula has created a special collection in association with Vlisco which was recently shown in Cotonou, Benin on 8 November 2008.

Thula also participated in Mozambique Fashion Week in December 08 and showed his collection in Addis Ababa in January 09.

Thula now produces his effortlessly elegant women's wear from his Rosebank Studio in JHB as well as designing at Gavin Rajah in Cape Town on a freelance basis. His ready to year collection is available from Gavin Rajah store in Cavendish, Cape Town.

The 25 year old designer dresses women on the move like Caprice, Noni Gasa, Busi Lurayi, Penny Lebyane, Bridget Masinga and Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.

Designers display innovation and excellence at Audi Joburg Fashion Week 2009

Fashionistas throughout the world, that time has come again! Choosing to eschew a predictable path in the line-up for the third annual Audi Joburg Fashion Week, the premier autumn/winter collections are set to be the most exciting seen on a South African runway to date.

Some of the highest quality established designers, including Thula Sindi and Fabiani, are showing their autumn/winter collections this year. However, many of the collections are from the edgier and developing designers, ensuring that innovation and surprise is also firmly on the agenda.

Suzaan Heyns, Heni, Abigail Keats, Chimera and Stefania Morland have all established reputations for the unconventional and beautiful. David Tlale is seldom shy of drama as well as exquisite detailing. Artistic Soul is capable of redefining urban men’s wear. And of the debut collections, Tarien Malherbe has already developed quite a following among the fashion forward crowd, having tapped into trends well ahead of the usual curve.

Commenting on the line-up for Audi Joburg Fashion Week, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, chairperson of African Fashion International remarked, “It is our aim to ensure that both the global and local interest and commitment to South African fashion is kept at an all-time high. By providing a schedule that is innovative, exciting and of the highest quality, we are able to showcase South African design talent, comparable to any in the world.”

Taking place at Sandton Convention Centre over four days from 21 – 24 January 2009, this is the first time Audi Joburg Fashion Week has been scheduled to ensure that designers are able to get their collections in store, and in fashion magazines, for South Africa’s winter season.

The J&B® DJ Dreamteam welcomes new member

The campaign run by J&B® has almost come full-circle. You may remember this exciting campaign known as the J&B® Start A Party that put together a DJ dream team from Mzansi's cream of the crop in this profession. You may also remember that after the 10 DJ's were announced, other wannabee jockeys were given a chnace to submit their self-produced tracks and the public invited to vote at www.jbscotch.co.za, to decide who they felt had the skills to be named amongst the best in the industry.

Well, that skillful beatsmith has been selected. Ian, who calls himself DJ Iancredible (see first picture above), will be joining the likes of Fistaz, Oskido, Blackcoffee, Lady Lea, Euphonik, and Fresh, to name a few, to complete the J&B® DJ Dreamteam. After successful staging of the J&B® Start A Party events in Jozi and Cape Town, the fun still continues. The DJ's are busy churning the beats for the tracks to be included in the compilation album that will be released at the end of January 2009.

To those who cast their votes and those that attended the two parties, your support is greatly appreciated. I attended the Jozi leg of the party and is was absolutely awesome. The DJ I wanted to see more than anybody else was Blackcoffee, after the last time seeing him do what he does best at the after party to the SAMA's about 2 years ago. And he didn't disappoint, especially after my turning back from the gate as he arrived at the venue. I had a brief chat with him as he rushed into the DJ booth and rocked the audience.

Daniel Craig diversifies his roles very well

Many people are in greatly and widely anticipating Daniel Craig's latest flick as James Bond on Quantum Of Solace. Will he better his role from his first stint as 007 in Casino Royale? Well, before you get to find out, you will gleefully revel in a gem of another of his films that will be released this coming Friday, titled Flashbacks Of A Fool. I have just come back from watching it and was impressed with the amazing contrast to his character as James Bond.

Flashbacks Of A Fool revolves around an introspective look at an ageing Hollywood actor's life. Leading a meanless life, filled with women, drugs and all other trimmings of the famous and fortunate, Joe Scott, played by Daniel Craig, flashes back to his life as a teenager when all terribly went wrong. A tragic moment involving his teen best friend forces him to re-live a part of his life he would rather forget about, but his guilt proves too strong to dismiss a horrific and regrettable incident that ran him away from home. Realising that he would never be at peace unless his conscious is eased, he travels back home to face his demons.

Daniel Craig proves that he is an amazing actor with an amazing ability to tranform from the suave, commanding, and hard special agent to a sweet, sensitive and fault-laced gentleman. I was sold on him when I watched him do magic on Layer Cake, even before he was selected to play the latest Bond. His flawed character on Flashbacks Of A Fool in credible, evoking feelings of symphathy, compassion and understanding for his journey through life. The character development for the main charcaters here is also fantastic, resulting in a well-put-together story. Although there is a great deal of nudity in the film, it's done tastefully and greatly aligned to the characters and the story, therefore forgivable.

I was happy to see an appearance from rapper Eve playing opposite Daniel Craig, however small her part was. She played it quite well, I must say, she was very convincing in her character. Another impressive performance came from Mark Strong who I've just recently seen on Body Of Lies. His versatality shines through his role as Joe's agent who is brutally honest about his client being seen by the industry and the public as a washed up actor. Harry Eden, the young man who plays the young Joe, also sizzles in his performance.

This is an absolutely awesome film. It will make you laugh, and also make you cry; make you angry and also make you symphathise. It's really a pity that the rest of the country won't get to see it on the big screen as it only opens at cinemas in Cape Town this coming Friday, 14th November 2008. But hey, you can catch it on DVD when it is released in that format.

So You Think You Can Dance Finalists Revealed.

It's Thursday night and I've just returned from the SABC1 gig where the finalists in the So You Think You Can Dance reality dance show were announced. I'm happy with the choices the judges went with, all of the 20 competitors are extremely talented. The finalists that featured a lot of hip hop moves in their routines gathered more applauses as the videos were presented on the projector and when they were introduced to the stage. A few appealled to me as well, including Megan, who used to dance for the late Lebo Mathosa. I'm really looking forward to Saturday evening's live show where the finalists will begin their journey and fight to keep their places until the victor is crowned.

I spotted a few personalities at the gig, including the super kind buzz couple Slikour and Bonang, husband and wife Pepsi Pokane and Machere, the naturally beautiful former Miss SA Teen and Selimathunzi presenter Zizo Beda, another Selimathunzi presenter Mncediso 'Kaos' Matu (I saw the episode of City Ses'la he was featured in early this week and thought his acting was descent. What do you think, should he explore acting more?), and current Miss SA Tansey Coetzee.
