Jozi premiere a huge success

I have seen the new local big screen comedy JOZI 3 times already and have enjoyed it all 3 times.  The third time though was different because I attended the official huge premiere held at Montecasino where the cast and crew were present.  Other familar faces in the entertainment world came through to show support and have a good time.  Not only that, but politicians were also in the house to show their support for the industry.

Some of the popular names and faces that attended include Scandal's Dawn Matthews, Rhythm City's Jamie Bartlett, musician and actress KB; I believe all in support of fellow actress Moshidi Motshegwa, who is one of the stars of JOZI. Portia Gumede, whose new show 4Play debuted on eTV last week was also there with actress and Metro FM newsreader Vatiswa Ndara. The lead actor in the movie Carl Beukes (who became popular as Paul on Isidingo) attended with his girlfriend. They are a lovely couple and it even shows from their matching outfits, Carl in a black suit and other half in a black cocktail dress. Fellow JOZI actress Lindiwe Matshikiza was also there.

Minister of Trade And Industry Rob Davis delivered a noteworthy speech before the screening of the movie.  He painted a vivid picture of how much contribution his government department has contributed to the advancement of the Arts.  For example, the department's provision of skilled descent jobs.  he added, "We have invested about R800 million to the arts and culture industry since 2004". 


After the movie was screened, Anant Singh called the cast and crew to the stage.  It was a nice gesture, so we can see them with the naked eye.  What was even more moving though, was his passionate speech before the movie was screened where he revealed how he feels JOZI has a commercial instinct, even with its very local and South African feel.
 

As for the movie, it provides a great landscape of the life in JOZI.  It shows both the good and bad of the city we love so much, of course in a hilarious nature.  However, as much as I picked up some experiences I could relate to, I feel they could have done more, especially with the kind of talent they had working behind the scenes and in front of the camera.  I mean Anant Singh has produced such world-renowned beauties like Yesterday and Red Dust. 

I also enjoyed watching the moving 3-minute video with a collage of images and video of Nelson Mandela and apartheid era, screened in tribute to Tata Madiba and Ahmed Kathrada.  I couldn’t help though thinking what was going on through the audience’s minds as the images rolled on the screen. 

JOZI opens at cinemas on the 26th of February 2010.

Law Abiding Citizen advanced screening a soaring success

Even though the advanced screening of Law Abiding Citizen, hosted by YEAHBO.DOT.NET, started a bit late because it was screened at the same theatre the Michael Jackson film screened (which overan its time), it was still a sounding success.

The guests started arriving as early as 16:45, amongst the early birds the very dignified and talented Lindelani Mkhize and his wife. I was very humbled and appreciative of their understanding of the late start to the joyous occassion.

Before the beginning of the movie, as usual I took to the mic to give away great goodies, including Bruno hampers, Virgin Active hampers, VIP tickets to MTV Base Night's monthly soiree taking place this coming friday, 06 November 2009, the same day Law Abiding Citizen hit cinemas throughout the country, as well as Jamie Foxx's Ignition CD's (thanks to Sony Music). The giveaway exercise proved very long when guests couldn't find the pieces of papers stuck beneat their seats, but recovered nicely as I got into a nice interaction with the guests, asking them questions related to the movie, as well as related to MTV Base Nights, (where hip hop outfit Jozi will be launching their new alabum), as well as related to YEAHBO.DOT.NET.

Although I had watched the film more than 2 weeks ago, I sat through the second half because I wanted to see the reactions of the guests when my favourite scene was running. As precisely as I had expected, everybody reacted the very same way I did; I chucked as they literally jumped off their seats. Law Abiding Citizen will keep you thrilled for the complete duration of the movie with the suspense, the mystery, the espionage and spycraft elements of the movie, the interesting and unique story, as well as the sterling performances from all the actors involved. The chemistry between the main rivals, Clyde and Eric, played by current Hollywood leading man Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx respectively, is dynamic and superb. F. Gary Gray definitely has another winner in his hands. His directing shows his flair and understanding for the art.

It was great getting positive responses from the guests after the movie. People like Unreleased Records owner Draztik and actor and TV presenter Fezile Makhanya (whom I caught up with after not seeing him for a while) gave me their two cents, and my great friends Melanie Ramjee and Louise Pillay echoed their sentiments via Twitter minutes after seeing the movie. An impressive cast doesn't save Next Day Air

When I saw the lineup for Benny Boom's directoral big screen debut, I got excited. I mean looking at names such as Mos Def, Debbie Allen, Mike Epps, Donald Faison and even Lauren London, I had hopes that it would be a great piece for the music video director.

Needless to say, I wasn't very impressed. Although it's made in a premise of a nice comedy, both actors who I've enjoyed as comedians in their respective works, Mike Epps and Donald Faison, failed to live up to what we know them for. The opportunity for this to be a great comedy was there, but somehow they all failed to capitalise on this with fresh and witty dialogue. Mos Def always adds a certain energy and charisma to his characters. He did here too, but maybe the predictable plot hindered this to shine through.

I must admit though, that he was probably the one who had a few jokes I laughed at. Always groundbreaking in his undertakings, he made news a few months ago for getting the whole cast not to use the "N" while shooting Next Day Air and even when they were on set and not shooting. That's certainly auppladable, proving yet again that Mos Def is not just your regular rapper.

Anyway, because I'm a fan of his, and also actors like Donald Faison (liked his work on Scrubs), Wood Harris (he killed it on The Wire), as well as the beautiful Lauren London (most popular for her stint alongside T.I. on the movie ATL), I jumped at an opportunity to do an advanced screening for my readers and other peeps in the industry. Transformers sequel a treat for the fans

Machines fighting each other, (well, most of the time) has never been so exhilerating. I wanted to do a screening for my readers for this movie as soon as I knew about the release date. However, it wasn't to be as the print was only sent to the country this week and even the majority of the media only got to watch the movie today.

Anyway, the highly-anticipated blockbuster is upon us and is set to make history at the box offices throughout the world. I have been following singer-turned-actor Tyrese Gibson, who reprises his role as Sgt. Epps on the sequel, on twitter as he counted his travels in promotion of the movie. The excitement his travels built culminated into an amazing experience as I watched Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen this afternoon.

The stirring action makes for thrilling viewing as it transports you into the world of robotics. The underlying themes of loyalty, sympathy and courage, amongst others, add an inspirational twist to the action-packed feast. There is also more comedy this time around (Shia's mother's character was hilarious throughout), with an addendum of a smart and witty dialogue. You will not feel the 2.5 hours as you are glued to the screen and on the edge of your seat throughout the movie.

It's no secret that I've been a big fan of Tyrese, on top of his music, since seeing him on Baby Boy back in 2001. Although his part was not big here, he was able to use the screen time he had very well and smartly. I've also been very impressed with leading young man Shia LaBeouf lately, proving a great action hero in his roles. Other noteworthy performances include that of John Turturro and John Benjamin Hickey, who by coincidence, both appear on The Taking Of Pelham 123 with Denzel Washington and John Travolta that I watched at a press screening yesterday. The sexy Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel also reprise their roles, rounding up an amazing ensemble cast that also sees Mark Ryan returning as Bumblebee's voice.

The target audience for Transfomers: Revenge Of The Fallen, including the original Transformers fans, will love it as much as I did .It opens at cinemas nationwide next Wednesday, 24th June 2008. Go out there and show your support.

Star Trek to resonates with the fans of the franchise

I cannot say I remember the full story in the Star Trek series because I watched it sporadically when I was growing up. I wasn't even a huge fan of the series or the genre for that matter, but I have to admit that I enjoyed both the latest soon-to-be-released silver-screen adaptation by director JJ Abrams.

One of the reasons I anticipated watching the movie was the fact that they brought back the black character of Uhura, played this time by rising star Zoe Saldana. Another draw-card, in terms of actors, was Zachary Quinto, who has impressed me with his convincing demeanor in the supernatural drama series Heroes. A surprising addition to the cast was that of Tyler Perry as one of the Admirals. It was a bit wierd seeing him in such a role because of his portrayal of the Madea character in most of his films. Even those where he played a different character, it wasn't on the level of his character on Star Trek 11.

The Star Trek fans will enjoy the movie with much more appreciation that I did because they obviously know the story more intimately. However, this is not to say I didn't find it intriguing and interesting. Although it may have been another good versus evil tale, the way the ambivalence was carried out relatively well.

The elevent episode of Star Trek, also dubbed The Future Begins, opens at cinemas throughout the country on the 08th of May 2009.

Angels And Demons worth every bit of the anticipation

It's finally here!!! Angels and Demons takes you through a whirlwind of suspense, drama and mystery . I have just returned from the press screening of the movie where the theatre was filled up with press members (even people I had never seen in these screenings before) as if it was an opening day at the cinemas for a big blockbuster that the film actually is. Although the producers and everybody involved have been tight-lipped about the latest Ron Howard feature film, they had every reason to, to create the great deal of anticipation that it deserves.

Tom Hanks is in his element, way better than what he did with Ron Howard on their last collaboration on The Da Vinci Code. The rest of the cast, including Ewan McGregor, also display a great level of realness from their acting flair that brings out the authenticity of the film.

The suspense, the thrill, the mystery, the controversy, the debate about religion and science is sure to erupt, especially from the assortment religious groups, and particularly the Roman Catholics. The pacy nature of the film makes for riveting viewing. The ability to keep your attention for well over 130 minutes in itself is something not easy to do, but Angels And Demons did it so perfectly and effortlessly. Maybe it was the brilliant photography (cinematography), combined with the exceptional acting, the meaty plot, not to mention the exceptional music scoring and cohesiveness of the scenes from start to finish.

Angels And Demons opens at cinemas nationwide on Wednesday, 13 May 2009. If you enjoyed The Da Vinci Code, you are going to love Angels And Demons. And if you didn't, you are still going love this one the same.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine packed with hard-hitting action

I can't really say I remember watching any of the episodes in the X-Men movie series so I went to watch the latest one, X-Men Origins : Wolverine with a new and fresh interest. That very same interest resulted in my utmost enjoyment of the blockbuster.

Many were afraid that Mzansi director Gavin Hood will not measure up in the franchise for some odd and unexplanable reason. Needless to say, he brought the goods and very hard too. Although some may feel that he succumbed to Hollywood standards with the usage of extensive special effects, what other superhero movies hasn't dabbled in such animations. That's exactly where the excitement stems from when watching that type of a movie.

Reprising his role in this prequel to what has become one of the biggest franchises, Australian actor Hugh Jackman displays his knack for an action flick that has seen him garner much adolation from the industry and fans alike. This time he is accompanied by big names such Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds, amongst others, in bringing to life the story of where it all started for his Logan/Wolverine character. Proving more of his talent, he is accredited as one of the producers of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a feat never easy for just any actor.

I've got to mention that I was very impressed with artist/procuder Will.i.am. Seeing his name on the opening credits ignited a feeling of angst because I always take issue with singers/artists branching off into acting and not really cracking it. Of course there are a few exceptions to this, on top of head thinking about Queen Latifah, Mos Def, LL Cool J, Gregory Hines, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, Bette Midler, Cher, and Tyrese; who all have been able to transition smoothly and very well from one discipline to the other. But I digress. My point is that Will.i.am was bearable in his role.

Another actor that caught my attention was Hakeem Kae-Kazim, the Nigerian actor (who once lived in South Africa, very popular for his Fresca advert) who has appeared briefly in big blockbusters including Pirates Of the Caribbean: At Worlds End.

Overall, X-Men Origins: Wolverine did what is set out to do, entertain. X-Men fans will certainly enjoy it. And the fact that all these positive facts are attached to a South African director makes for even more excitement. We need to prove to the world that we are just as capable of producing such big blockbusters, so, go out and there watch Gavin Hood's take on the franchise, his latest directoral project, X-Men Origins: Wolverine when it opens at cinemas nationwide on Thursday, 30th April 2009, a day before the rest of the world sees it on Friday, 01st of May 2009.

Two Lovers examines the complex intricancies of love and relationships

I believe this is Joaquin Phoenix's last movie as he contemplates embarking on his rap career. I'm not sure if he'll crack it as a rapper, but he certainly has had a great run as an actor, and hope he reconsiders this decision.

In this film, he is paired with Gwyneth Paltrow, who I last saw on Proof with Sir Anthonny Hopkins. Although Joaquin hasn't really been in many films with such an artistic feel, Gwyneth is no stranger to such a genre. It provides a few amazing enigma of occurrences that renders it a reasonably satisfying dramatic piece. It would actually be interesting to see the original film, which this time has been remade by director James Grey.

The story centres around a depressed young man (played by Phoenix) who is caught between two women, one a sweet homely girl his parents are fixing him, and another a more mysterious, carefree dancer who has just moved into his residential building. Fighting his inner conflicts, he has to make a decision, but not until the intricancies of such a situation bowl over and test his manhood, and eventually his humanity. Two Lovers comprises of bits and bits of realistic relationship dymanics many people are subjected to but always just keep at the back of their minds, until such a time it can no longer be ignored.

Although not one of the best performances from these two, Two Lovers is good for a film of its nature. The idea is brought across very clearly but in a manner that doesn't leave the audience feeling emotionally drained, at least not for Gwyneth's character. Perhaps it's because the intrinsic qualities of her character was not that intense, in terms of the audience conneting in such a level that they sympathise with her that greatly. In addition to Phoenix, the other actors gave more convincing performances.

Two Lovers will be released at movie theatres around the country on the 30th of April 2009. If you are a fan of the two, check it out.

I Love You, Man a fun-filled journey all the way

Fun, charming and sweet are the first words that pop into mind after watching the latest romantic comedy, I Love You, Man.

The movie revolves around a couple who are about to get married. Everything is moving smoothly with the wedding arrangements. That's until the groom realises he doesn't have any friends, and therefore will not be able to have a best man at the wedding. He then begins a search to find a best man by having man-dates. What transpires through these dates is the vehicle in which the humour, emotions, and his character development are brought about. What I thoroughly enjoyed was the way Paul Rudd (who played the groom, Peter Klaven) was so geniune with his humour. It was so real and relatable that it makes the film even more authentic (the authenticity kinda reminded me of Anne Hathaway's character in Rachel Getting Married).

Jason Segell as one of the man-dates also complemented this sincerity of the characters. Music legend Quincy Jones' daughter Rashida Jones did a fantastic job as the bride, providing the sweet element into the relationship, not that the groom lacked that sensitive side. Having been a fan of the sitcom, My Name Is Earl, it was great seeing Jaime Presley keeping her stance as a strong comedy actress. Although Kym Whitley only has a small role, her presence was also felt. Another noteworthy performance is that of JK Simmons, who has impresed me in his comedic roles, including in Burn After Reading and New In Town (which by the way was co-produced by Babyface's ex-wife Tracy Edmonds).

Romantic comedies have always been centred around women and their feelings, but this time around the attention is placed on the guys. I Love You, Man will make you laugh from beginning to end. The injection of just a right dose of some seriousness adds more substance into the film. I Love You, Man opens at cinemas nationwide on the 24th of April 2009.

Cadillac Records premiere a soaring success

So finally it happened, and I'm ecstatic about the results. My biggest movie premiere yet took place last night and what a better way to have one of the stars in the movie to be a guest.

This is how the idea came about: I learnt that Mos Def was coming to the country for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and wanted to do something with him. On the very same day, I learnt that Kenzhero already had secured a gig with him, so I got a bit more creative. I knew Mos Def is in Cadillac Records, a movie based loosely on Etta James' life, which will be released by Ster Kinekor on the 29th of May 2009. I dediced to work on that angle.

After tireless communication with Mos Def's representatives, the ball got rolling. I approached Ster Kinekor with the idea and they took to it instantly. It's great to know I managed to pull this project off, and very well too, considering the sponsors we approached failed to see this great opportunity.

Anyway, the event happened last night at Ster Kinekor in Sandton City and it was on fire. Obviously the highlight of the event was Mos Def arriving and addressing the audience through a short interview by a young lady who won a Channel O competition. In addition to that, it was very moving that Mos decided to stay and watch at least 75% of the movie (he was only supposed to make and appearance and leave). The food was delicious and drinks flowing so easily. The whole event turned out amazingly well, with celebrities gallore.

First and foremost I've gotta thank Hardy McQueen for being a man of his word. From the beginning he told me that we were going to do this and we certainly did. Thanks Hardy, I can't emphasise enough how much your involvement in this project is appreciated. Thank you Irma for keeping me in check with regards to all the requirements from Hip Hop Alive's side. Thanks to Sibongile Khuzwayo who handled the catering segment of the event, the food was devine. To my friend Sizwe Dhlomo, thank you for agreeing to MC at such short notice and for your patience and calmness to the pressures that arose. And most importantly, as I did last night just before he left, thank you to Mos Def for his time and for ensuring this was a special moment for YEAHBO Entertainmnet (YEAHBO.DOT.NET). Fast And Furious Back To Its Roots

This year sees the return of big blockbusters on the big screen. One such formidable hit is the 4th instalment of Fast And Furious, which saw serious car fantics throughout the world revel in the action-packed flick.

I had an absolute pleasure of watching it yesterday and I was bowled over by the authenticity of it all, from the acting to the stunts, to the witty dialogue. It was certainly a great and smart call to bring back the original cast from the very first instalment. Actually, after watching it, it felt like I was only watching the sequel; almost as if the second and third editions didn't exist.

Although one of my favourites,Tyrese (who appeared in the second instalment), did not reprise his role, the rest of the original cast, including Vin Diesel, Paul Walker (who I haven't seen on the big screen in a while), Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. It was also enjoyable seeing Laz Alonso in his element as one of the bad guys. He was very impressive as he emmersed himself into a character called Phoenix.

Fast And Furious 4 opens at cinemas nationwide next Thursday, 09 April 2009. However, YEAHBO.DOT.NET has a treat for their subscribers and readers alike. Cadillac Records reminds us of how music should sound

Earlier today I had a chance of watching Cadillac Records, the new movie which is supposedly based relatively on singer Etta James' life. Having learned a lot about the movie, since I'm working on a premiere where we are anticipating Mos Def as a guest, it was good to finally witness what I have read about on the web, for myself.

The movie chronicles the rise of Chess Records (owned by Leornard Chess, played by convincingly Adrien Brody) and the colourful lives of their artists, including legendary blues and soul songstress Etta James (played by Beyonce Knowles), king of funk Muddy Waters (played by Jeffrey Wright), the distinctive and powerful-voiced Howlin' Wolf (played by Eamonn Walker), eccentric and humorous Berry Gordy (played by Mos Def), as well as talented but also troubled Little Walter (played by young Columbus Short). Narrated by Willie Dixon (played by Cedric the Entertainer), Cadillac Records is able to give you a vivid picture of how the music industry works, or at least worked then. Not that much has changed today, but some of the principals of the music business were a little different back then.

Many have praised Beyonce on this role, but I saw no progression from what she has done before, since she plays yet another singer here (by the way, she made sure she gets this role by signing on as an executive producer). I felt the male cast members did brilliantly in their respective roles. Especially Columbus Short in his role as Little Walter. He commanded the flawed character and made it his own with such ease and flair. Jeffrey Wright also excelled as Muddy Waters, displaying an amazing ability to flex his acting muscle to great potency. The same needs to be said for Mos Def, who gave the role of Berry Gordy awesome vigor and charm. And of course Adrien Brody has the ability to show different emotions just at the right moment, and a lot has to be said for an actor who is able to soundly capture whatever moment is required at that time with such precision. Worth a mention is actress Gabrielle Union, who plays Waters' ride-or-die other half Geneva Wade, also able to display her emotions very fittingly throughout the movie.

All in all, Cadillac Records was a great film. It gives you a glimpse into the workings of the music industry and the assorted and mostly troubled lives led by musicians or artists. This film also marks the 50th anniversary of the Motown era, which Gordy was very influntial in steering.

Cadillac Records opens at selected cinemas nationwide on the 29th of May 2009. But before that, like I've mentioned above, YEAHBO.DOT.NET has been granted a screening of the film on the 07th of April 2009. Seth Rogan is his usual goofy selft on Zack And Miri Make A Porno

It wasn't until Knocked Up that I took notice of Seth Rogan as a fair comedy actor. He has this allure about his jokes that's very refreshing and unique. However, after seeing him on more movies, like Step Brothers and Pineapple Express, there was no more variation, just the same range. Apparently his character was different in Fanboys (which is slated for release a day after my birthday :-), 20 March 2009), but I can't give my insight since I haven't seen it yet.

If that is indeed true, I believe he has a potential to show his versatality more. Yesterday I watched his latest movie, Zack And Miri Make A Porno. Although he was his usual goofy self, there was something more deep and relatable about his character. He pulled off the blending of the seriousness of the story with his comic relief routines. He plays the character of Zack, an unumbitious coffee shop worker who lives in the same apartment with his long-time friend Miri (played by Elizabeth Banks), who they have been friends with since kindergarden. Although he fantasises about hooking up romantically with her, the thought that they are like brother and sister stands in his way. That is until they find themselves in a dire financial situation and face being evicted.

They conjure up this idea of making a porn film after an interesting experience at their high school re-union. The deliberating process of making the film helps them realise and reveal the feelings they have kept bottled up for each other for years. Although things get shaky in their quest for the undertsanding of each other as lovers, the foundation of their friendship helps them overcome those impediments and they ultimately get married. To ensure they never face such financial difficulties again, they go into adult film production permanently, creating porn films spoofing some of the biggest movie blockbusters.

I couldn't help but notice that Seth has used the acting ropes of Chris Robinson, who he also worked with in Pineapple Express alongside James Franco. In the opening credits I was excited to see Tisha Campbell-Martin (of Martin and My Wife And Kids fame), but after realising she only appeared briefly in one scene, I was kinda disappointed. I was also not happy at the steroetypical role of an angry black woman with sagging boobs she played. SMH. Oh, and Justin Long was hilarious as a gay lover to one of Zack's former schoolmates who Miri used to have a crush on. I enjoyed his stint on He's Just Not That Into You.

Anyway, although the film is not that hardcorde in terms of adult entertainment, it does have a great deal nudity, so it's definitely for adult viewing. Zack And Miri Make A Porno is funny and goofy, but also touches you with the emotions it evokes. It opens at cinemas nationwide on the 08th of May 2009.

Watchmen is set to entertain and provoke your thoughts

Yesterday afternoon I watched a movie called Watchmen and am glad I went into it with no preconceptions about it. When I got to the theatre, I was amazed by the turnout from the media and other players in the industry, which really piqued my interest even more. Zack Snyder, the director of 300 sure knows how to direct those graphic novel features. Watchmen was entertaining, thought-provoking and visually appealing.

The plot revolves around a group of former superheros who, when one of them is killed in cold-blood, regroup to solve the mystery surrounding their former friend's death. The quest for the truth reveals even more mystery as they come to a realisation that there is more at play than they could have ever imagined. The story was very interesting, full of twists and turns, yet flowing effortlessly, making for riveting viewing. The fashion in which the history between America and US Soviets was very engaging too.

The actors played their parts very well, although at times I felt some acts were overdone (e.g. the woman superhero's stance whenever she was about to partake on a mission, it was overly dramatic). I enjoyed the choreography very much, which resulted in these very amusing fight sequences. The cinematography also blended very well with the theme and the characters of the movie. Something I also noticed was Patrick Wilson's versatality as an actor. I saw him this past Monday on The Passengers, with Anne Hathaway, and his character was totally different. Even his physical looks on Watchmen were vastly different, you could be fooled into thinking it was not the same person.

I believe Watchmen is going to follow in the same footsteps as 300, in terms of success. It's entertaining and fully packed with action, mystery, reality and some fantasy, as well as great and appeasing visuals. The almost 3 hour length of the movie will not even matter because you are glued to the screen from beginning to end. The energy-packed thriller opens at cinemas nationwide next Friday, 06 March 2009. Be sure to check it out.

The Reader makes for compelling viewing.

Over the past few weeks I've posted about a number of movies that are amongst the front runners in the upcoming Oscars. We are two days away from the Academy Awards where we will learn which ones take the golden statuettes. Yesterday afternoon I had a pleasure of watching one more movie that stands a very good chance, in a least 2 of the 5 categories it has been nominated in.

The Reader stars Kate Winslet, who was given a double victory when she won Golden Globes for both The Reader as a supporting actress as well as the leading actress on another masterpiece of hers with Titanic co-star Leonardo Di Caprio, Revolutionary Road. Also on the bill is Ralph Fiennes, who has proved time and time again an indisputed talent. The acting from both parties is superb. Even the young actor, David Kross shows us a great deal of talent as the young Michael Berg (played by Fiennes in the older years).

The story was also quite different and refreshing. In summary, Hanna (Winslet) carries on a tumultous affair with a teenager schoolkid, Michael (Kross, and later Fiennes), that end with both parties heartbroken, moreso, the young Michael. They get an opportunity to re-unite later when Hanna stands trial for heinous crimes by the Germans against the Jews, in which Hanna is one of the accused and Mike a law student doing his practicals. Although he gets a chance to avail himself, re-unite with his old flame, and possibly help Hanna get acquitted, he decides against it. When both eventually re-unite, the obvious regrets for leaving things the way they were are revealed.

It's a story about love, about tragedy, about morality or the lack thereof, and ultimately the dynamics between men and women and their differences. It's a very heavy film because of its sombre nature. You do get annoyed at their actions, but also at the same time sympathise with both thier flawed characters. It was really compelling viewing, from start to finish. The fine acting on display alone makes for an amazing film.

The Reader opens at cinemas in Mzansi on the 27th of March 2009.

I'm rooting for The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (especially for Teraji P. Henson), The Reader, Slumdog Millionare and of course The Dark Knight because I really want the late Heath Ledger to make history (he's always be among my all-time favoutite actors).

The Confessions Of A Shopaholic possesses charm

Another chick flick is on the way in the form of a new book-turned-movie Confessions Of A Shopaholic. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to see it, but was I glad I decided to. It's seldom that you watch that type of movie and be in stitches the whole way through, especially for a guy. From beginning to end, it possesses this air of charm about it and surprisingly fun to watch.

Partly based on the book with the same title, Confessions Of A Shopaholic looks at a period in life of Rebecca Bloomwood, a young fashion slave who works as a journalist. When she gets fired, she gets into trouble because she doesn't have money to satisfy her addiction for high-end fashion. Instead of slowing down, as her best friend Suze would like nothing more, she gets herself more and more into debt, with utter denial of her current financial debt. She soon mistakenly ends up writing a column for a financial investment magazine where all hell breaks loose.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic is funny and extremely enjoyable, thanks to Isla Fisher's charm, wit and smarts. Although she makes these dumb mistakes, you cannot help but love how she has a recovery plan for each and every one of them. Even though some of those mistakes have a much deeper impact in her friendships, family and love life, she manages to salvage those relationships just in time. It's refreshing to be able to watch a movie and laugh out loud almost throughout the whole experience. I believe this is a breakout role that will see Isla Fisher reach the status of the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway and other actresses of the same breath.

For all shopaholics, you will see a little bit of you in the movie and learn so much about spending your money. I have to mention ex-basketballer John Salley's character was hilarious, it was kind of weirdly funny seeing him playing such a role. Confessions Of A Shopaholic opens at cinemas nationwide on the 13th of March 2009.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is a rich and exceptional tale

Over the past few weeks I've had a pleasure of seeing films that have won numerous industry awards and ultimately becoming front runners for this year's biggest pictures at the Oscars to take place shortly. Finally, I was able to watch The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button yesterday afternoon. The Gary Finch-directed film happens to lead the 2009 Academy Awards with an impressive 13 nominations (just 1 nod shy of historic Titanic), including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for leading man Brad Pitt, Best Writing for screenwriter Eric Roth, as well as Best Supporting Actress for groudbreaking acting showcase from Teraji P. Henson.

Based on a true story, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is an epic story of a man who ages backwards. Born in a body of an 80 year old man, Benjamin Button (played by Brad Pitt) grows backwards as we see different eras in his life from old age, to middle age, to young adulthood, to teenager, as ultimately to infancy just before he dies. Gary Finch takes us through a captivating journey of Button's experiences, good and bad. Done in an immensely emaculate manner, the richness of the story permeates through the well-synchronised parts to the whole tale.

The acting is exceptional, thanks to Brad Pitt's comfortability in displaying the troubled, yet content character. His ability to fit into each and every period of his life as Button, from the 80 year old man to his teenage years (although there was help from other stand-ins and CGI animation technology), is marvellous. Brad is not the only one who delves into the inner emotions to bring forth a credible and well-developed character. Cate Blanchett, as always, takes her role and plays it with such flair and poise. As much as Cate Blanchett shows her awesome acting chops, Teraji P. Henson steals the show with her sterling and outstanding portrayal of Button's adopted mother. I had heard and read about her performance being dubbed a groundbraking one, and after seeing her dig deeper into her strength as a woman, mother and a nurturer, I've got to say she really deserves the hype and the nomination she garnered for her role in this film.

Speaking of the hype, I'm not show why Tilda Swinton is not getting any for her role here because she was also on a class of her own, reminding me of the great work she has done on movies like Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian (which is where I took notice of her great acting ability), Michael Clayton (a film that won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2007), and Burn After Reading (I believe the first time she acted on the same set with Brad Pitt). Mahershalalhashbaz Ali also plays his part very well as Queenie's (played by Teraji P. Henson) husband. He reminded me why I enjoyed his performance on the supernatural series The 4400, making an impression on me as one of the great black actors there is.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is an amazing piece of work. Not just the story, but the manner in which it is told, the people telling it, and the director's simple way of conveying the different characters and their experiences. Although it's almost 3 hours, there is never a dull moment as you get engaged and want to know what happens next. I appluad everybody involved because it's no mean feat holding a viewers attention for such a long time, and do it successfully.

Even though Teraji P. Henson has some really tough competition in the Supporting Actress contest at the Oscars, I'll be rooting for her all the way. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button opens at Mzansi cinemas nationwide on the 27th of February 2009.
