Invictus premiere a soaring success

As I write this, I'm feeling the remnants of the wonderful evening I've just had. It's one of those experiences to cherish forever. The premiere of Invictus, that took place at Emperors Palace tonight, was all that you can imagine and more. I actually watched the movie at a press screening yesterday and was instantly sold because of its moving nature. But after participating in a roundtable interview session with both lead man Morgan Freeman (portraying our former president Madiba in Invictus) and one of the producers Lori McCreary, ignited more excitement and interest to attend the premiere.

When I arrived at the venue with my friend Stevel Marc, you could already feel the air of exhilaration lingering around. When we walked the yellow carpet, the fans expecting to see the movie stars were gleefully cheering on some of the celebrities that were also in attendance. This was surely a sign of things to come.

The pre-cocktail part of the event was filled with great people in the entertainment industry, politicians, business people, and an assortment of individuals in other spheres of our economy; all donned in their best black-tie threads. I spotted familiar faces, including Romy Titus and Timothy Maurice (are they a couple?); a fellow movie reviewer and somewhat of a role model to me, Peter Feldman with his wife; current Springboks player Brian Habana and new wife; and rugby player Joost Van De Westuizen and wife Amor Vittone, who I saw proudly walking the yellow carpet beyond the scandal involving Joost that broke early this year. I even got a brief chance to chat with mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela when I asked to take a picture of her and her guests; I must say that was one of the highlights of the night for me.

The fun continued, with PJ Powers entertaining the guests with her energetic performance. Before long, guests were requested to take their places in different cinemas in the complex that was fully booked just for this glorious occasion. Little did I know that my friend Stevel had hooked up with Ray Ray (the guy who is the face of the MTN Ayoba ad campaign - they work together on MTN rigs that happen when MTN does their activations) and upgraded our access to VIP, resulting in us watching the movie with big guns, including mama Winnie, Brian Habana, SABC's Leo Manne and other important people. At the cinema, I spotted many more familiar faces, like Santi Botha (former Marketing Director for MTN - not sure what portfolio she holds there now). Me , Stevel and Ray Ray were seated just behind Elana Afrika and her boyfriend, who she introduced to us and with whom we had some engaging conversations.

The moment for the invited guests to see the movie had arrived. Just minutes before that, in walked Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary to the theatre to give their speeches. In the process, they introduced a recorded video of co-star Matt Damon (who plays former Springboks captain Francois Pienaar in the film) and director Clint Eastwood apologising for not being here for this amazing experience (they mentioned they were already shooting another film together).

Before the film, real footage featuring the milestone events portrayed in the film was shown. It was interesting to observe how the crowd reacted to the film, especially since I had seen the movie and particularly anticipated the reactions from specific, different scenes. After the movie we hung out just outside the cinema where desserts and coffee were served. This is where things got even more exciting and interesting as people shared their views about the film. Stevel introduced me to actor Daniel Hadebe (he appears in the movie as part of Madiba's security detail) who had a lot to say about the movie. He actually critisized the film, saying he loves Clint Eastwood, but he felt there was something missing in Invictus for him. Could it be that he was too close to it, since he was on the set for the shooting of the film? Well, I guess everybody has and is free to express their views. Generally, the views on the movie were favourable, Sthandiwe Kgoroge (husband Tony Kgoroge played a huge role leaing the security detail to Madiba) loved it. I was also introduced and chatted with model and businessman Amos Vuma who shared the same sentiments of favour and positivity.

I feel Clint Eastwood was able to capture so well and concisely the spirit of the country at the time of the Rugby World Cup. Undoubtedly, Morgan Freeman was brilliant as Tata Madiba. Although you could pick up he was American, he was still able to play the character with such flair and precision. Matt Damon was the same, actually giving us the best South African (Afrikaans this time) accent any American actor has ever done (well, maybe on th same par with John Malkovich on Disgrace). Tony Kgoroge was just as amazing, showing his rare and unique talent that captures you.

It was a beautiful occasion, well-planned and groundbreaking. It's one of the experiences I will cherish for the rest of my life. Tumi hosts listening session for Whole Worlds

Tumi, mostly known with his band The Volume, has a new album out. Sony Music invited us to the listening session that was held at The Planetarium at Wits University on Wednesday afternoon.

Always the creative soul, the selection of the venue had lots to do with his album, aptly titled Whole Worlds. At the reception area, there were flyers with sketches and pictures of different planets stuck on the walls alongside the material from the venue, making for a smooth assimilation into the space. After having drinks and Astrios, we were led to the inside of The Planetarium.

Lance from Sony Music introduced Tumi to the media and other guests that were in attendance. As the lights went out, the excitement permeated in the air, in anticipation of this truly unique experience, at least in South Africa. Tumi took to the mic and described inspirations for each of the 4 songs he played us (helped on the decks by DJ Bionic). He relayed to us neatly-worded descriptions of how the songs came about and each and every person involved with the tracks. I instantly fell in love with each of the songs he played, especially one that features mama Sibongile Khumalo.

It was a breath-taking experience, knitting together the visuals of the planets on the roof and the powerful sounds that came from the speakers, As we left The Planetarium, we were gifted with a copy of the full album with some more Astrios as well as a remarkable booklet with amazing photography and beautifully coined words that accompanied the CD.

I played the whole CD on my way back from the listening session and with each listen, I fell more and more in love with Whole Worlds. It's an amazing piece of work that Tumi should be utterly proud of. It's hip hop music elevated into another level, only a way Tumi would make it. Whole Worlds is available at music stores nationwide now, go out and cop it.

MTVBase Nights to close 2009 with a BANG

It seems MTVBase is going all out for their last monthly MTVBase Nights event for December, set to take place in two cities this time around. Here is what my wifey, Melanie, says on the release she sent me:

MTV base nights and Absolut Rocks bring you "Who Gon’ Run this town tonight" on 4 December in Jozi and Durban with major album launches in both cities.

Since its inception in July, MTV base nights has become the most anticipated night out on the monthly social calendar. With the crowds the party pulls every month, artists and bands have started using the first Friday’s event, as the launch pad for new releases, like Jozi’s “Wildlife” in November.

Law Abiding Citizen advanced screening a soaring success

Even though the advanced screening of Law Abiding Citizen, hosted by YEAHBO.DOT.NET, started a bit late because it was screened at the same theatre the Michael Jackson film screened (which overan its time), it was still a sounding success.

The guests started arriving as early as 16:45, amongst the early birds the very dignified and talented Lindelani Mkhize and his wife. I was very humbled and appreciative of their understanding of the late start to the joyous occassion.

Before the beginning of the movie, as usual I took to the mic to give away great goodies, including Bruno hampers, Virgin Active hampers, VIP tickets to MTV Base Night's monthly soiree taking place this coming friday, 06 November 2009, the same day Law Abiding Citizen hit cinemas throughout the country, as well as Jamie Foxx's Ignition CD's (thanks to Sony Music). The giveaway exercise proved very long when guests couldn't find the pieces of papers stuck beneat their seats, but recovered nicely as I got into a nice interaction with the guests, asking them questions related to the movie, as well as related to MTV Base Nights, (where hip hop outfit Jozi will be launching their new alabum), as well as related to YEAHBO.DOT.NET.

Although I had watched the film more than 2 weeks ago, I sat through the second half because I wanted to see the reactions of the guests when my favourite scene was running. As precisely as I had expected, everybody reacted the very same way I did; I chucked as they literally jumped off their seats. Law Abiding Citizen will keep you thrilled for the complete duration of the movie with the suspense, the mystery, the espionage and spycraft elements of the movie, the interesting and unique story, as well as the sterling performances from all the actors involved. The chemistry between the main rivals, Clyde and Eric, played by current Hollywood leading man Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx respectively, is dynamic and superb. F. Gary Gray definitely has another winner in his hands. His directing shows his flair and understanding for the art.

It was great getting positive responses from the guests after the movie. People like Unreleased Records owner Draztik and actor and TV presenter Fezile Makhanya (whom I caught up with after not seeing him for a while) gave me their two cents, and my great friends Melanie Ramjee and Louise Pillay echoed their sentiments via Twitter minutes after seeing the movie. Below is more email responses I received from some of the guests that came through and who thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Sasol Schools Festival soars, more than 36 years later

Sasol invited me, and a few other media members, to the Mpumalanga leg of the long-running Sasol Schools Festival. Taking place at the Witbank Civic Theatre over two days, yesterday and today, the festival featured different aspects of professions in the arts sphere, specifically tailored to create awareness, inspire and motivate school pupils in the province to pursue such careers.

Before going further, let me provide just a bit about the background of this amazing initiative Sasol is involved in. The National Schools Festivals, a project of the Grahamstown Foundation, was originally conceived by Professor Guy Butler and started in Grahamstown over 36 years ago. It has grown from strength to strength and now covers all regions of South Africa, with the exception of Limpopo. The Gauteng and Mpumalanga festivals, together with Freestate/Northern Cape, form part of the Sasol Schools Festival Series. Sasol is the principal sponsor, while NLDTF and the Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) and Breadline Africa (BLA) are co-sponsors through the ACT BLA Fringe Grant awarded to the project for 2009.

The Sasol Mpumalanga Schools Festival, previously held in Secunda, is now taking place at the Witbank Civic Theatre, and took place as I have mentioned already, yesterday 15 and today 16 October with approximately 300 delegates that attended. The programme comprised up to four productions and 14 workshops. There were performances of The Suitcase by the legendary James Ngcobo, who we had an absolute pleasure of meeting earlier today; Le Carnival de ma Vie by Matchbox Theatre Collective; and The Sibikwa Players. Award-winning stage, film and television actor, James Ngcobo best known for his roles as editor Joe Dlamini on the SABC3 drama series Hard Copy and Mo on SABC 2 comedy series Stokvel, was set to inspire the learners with his keynote speech.

We went to different venues in the theatre where learners participated in professionally facilitated workshops, lectures, and productions focusing on different genres of the performing arts, as well as the spoken and written word. Participants also got to informally interact with artists and experts in all these areas and learn from their experience. It was such a great way to impart knowledge and skill that we foun ourselves joing the learners with different activities. Some of the highlighs for me personally was seeing the learners do break-dancing, which was energetic, fun and up-beat; as well as an interesting sketch-production workshop where this young boy displayed a sterling potential as a stage actor playing a person who cannot speak but communicating so well with a lady he was partnered with that was aksed to interpret what he was rying to communicate with her.
Th festival seemed to attract even the old who may have benefited from the festival when they were growing, viz. during lunch an old man serenaded us with his guitar and dancing skills, despite his health attempting to damper the spirits whe he started coughing uncontrollably at one point (see picure below).

Forging ahead from many other impediments, the festival, which has been sponsored by Sasol has for over two decades, focuses on holistic person-development and aims to expose learners from a variety of backgrounds, both affluent and previously disadvantaged, to the opportunities available to them through the Arts. Sasol is doing a phenomenal job in cultivating a culture of developing the children from as early as high school. I believe this will help in future entertainers getting into the industry with the right skills, attitude andf direction they need to build their careers and successfully maintain them. I also apppreciate the awareness and inspiration this festival is giving to the children, like one of the kids we chatted to who said he realised from participating in some of the activities that he would actually like to be a comedian.

Although I think it is a bit difficult to measure the success of the festival well into these kid's futures, I also believe there have been many people that started at the very same place and are now acclaimed entertainers in their own right in different disciplines. I'm looking foward to seeing the talent from this festival flourish and make our country proud in many years to come.

Michael Jackson fans to get a treat with his new film THIS IT IT.

Fans worldwide will have the opportunity to celebrate the global launch of Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT when Sony Pictures Entertainment hosts over 25 global premieres, with more than 15 of those coordinated simultaneously around the world, on Tuesday, October 27th. Three hours after the red carpet events begin, audiences will be able to see the highly anticipated film for the first time as the studio has added special advance screenings that evening throughout the world.

The South African premiere will take place on Thursday 28 October at 3am at Ster-Kinekor Fourways Mall, Cavendish in Cape Town, Gateway in Durban and Sterland in Pretoria. Tickets will be sold at R200 a ticket (Vitality and Edgars Club concessions will apply)

Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT will be available worldwide for a limited two-week engagement beginning, Wednesday October 28. Tickets for all shows, are available for purchase beginning this coming Sunday, September 27. South African moviegoers can purchase tickets for both the release of the film and premiere by visiting www.thisisitmovie.co.za.

It's happening again !!! Latinova in Rosebank will be hosting the MTV Africa Music Awards nominees party on 2 October in anticipation of the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards to be held in Kenya on 10 October.

Imagine That premiere proves an exciting affair for the kids

This past Saturday United International Pictures and Nickelodeon hosted the premiere of Eddie Murphy's latest movie, Imagine That, to be released countrywide on Friday, 25 September 2009.

UIP invited me and other people in the industry to enjoy the inspirational story with our families. Although I wished so much that my 10-year-old sister was around, because I know she would have immensely enjoyed it, those with kids in their households turned out in numbers. There were exciting activities for the kids to get involved in, e.g. drawing and painting, story telling by cartoon characters in custume, etc. It was a real fun afternoon.

Not to mention that it wasn't my first time watching the movie, but I still enjoyed it, definitely a title to own on DVD. Some of the reasons for my enjoyment of the movie is the fact that, as part of the story, the mystical world was left to your imagination. The young actress Yara Shahidi was a natural and funnyman Eddie Murphy also toned down his theatrics that we've come to know him for.

Imagine That opens at cinemas countryiwde just in time for the school holidays, on the 25th of September 2009. My sister is coming to Jozi for a visit , so I'll definitely be watching Imagine That again, with her.

District 9 does it again, for the second week in a row!

Last week we reported on YEAHBO.DOT.NET that the new local blockbuster DISTRICT 9 trashed local records as it topped the box office in it's opening weekend. It's done it again this past weekend by retaining its position atop the box office list.

DISTRICT 9 continues to hold the #1 position at the South African box office in its 2nd weekend on circuit (it released locally on the 28th of August) and has earned just over R4,600,000 to date and still going strong.

DISTRICT 9’s performance in its 2nd weekend is 28% better than the second weekend results for TERMINATOR SALVATION and well over double those of other local comparative releases, WHITE WEDDING and TSOTSI.

DISTRICT 9 features Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Kenneth Nkosi, Vanessa Hayward, Mandla Gaduka, Eugene Khumbanyiwa, David James, Louis Minnaar, Sylvaine Strike and many other recogniseable South-African actors.

The film was first showcased at Comic-Con in July 2009 in the United States and has been conquering the box-office and garnering rave reviews everywhere it’s released to date. It continues its extraordinary run at the US box-office, where it is on track to join the $100 million “blockbuster” list for 2009.

David James (in the role of Koobus) commented on the success so far on the film: “I am overwhelmed. Wherever I go people are talking about this movie, and the fact that I had the opportunity to be part of this great film is a real humbling experience.”

MTVbase Nights rock Latinova in Jozi

MTVbase launched a series of themed night events a few months ago in different venues around the country where local talent is showcased, in support of the network's objectives. These parties/shows take place every first Friday of the month.

This past Friday MTVbase did it large as we ushered in the new season, Spring. The MTVbase Nights last Friday only featured 2 artists that were nominated in this year's MAMA's as MTV Africa's Road To The MAMA's. When the awards were launched last month, I asked MTV Africa's Communications Director if this project would happen this year in the build up to the actual event. She confirmed it will, but in a small scale with smaller events in clubs; and this past Friday just paid testimony to her response.

It was a great night filled with great music in the form of performances from MAMA nominees HHP and Gang Of Instrumentals (who featured super hip hop producer Omen in their first song), as well as hip hop deejays C-Live, Dimplez, Master M and Jay Music. Siya a.k.a. Slikour was the MC for the night and he did a great job getting the crowds hyped up. Tony Rich has arrived to serenade revellers at Golf Reef City thios weekend.

You may have heard a few months ago that the soulful crooner will be in the country to perform 2 exclusive shows at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino on the weekend on the 10th-11th July 2009. Well he is here, I believe he arrived a day before yesterday.

For those that are not familiar with Tony Rich or his music, he's one of the most under-rated and prolific musicians and songwriters of our lifetime. He first attracted attention as a staff writer for the Babyface- and L.A. Reid-led label La Face, churning out hits for the likes of Boyz II Men, Johnny Gill, TLC and Toni Braxton.

He then decided to mix different sounds of rock, jazz and soul music into his own music. Late in 1995, he released his hit single Nobody Knows which went all the way up to number 2 on the Billboard Charts. Under the moniker The Tony Rich Project, he released his debut album in early 1996; an album which scored him a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. He has released 5 more albums after that, included in that impressive catalogue the Nobody Knows: The Best of Tony Rich Project compilation.

Will Umalusi help steer local film productions in the right direction?

The local film industry is set to be on the spotlight once more when a new short feature called Umalusi (which is a person's name loosely translated to "the herdboy" in English) is released this coming Friday, 10th July 2009. What is most interesting is that the cast, and the director for that matter, are virtually unknown, so we will get to judge the film by what we see rather than being biased towards some of the names we like. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I can't really give it a thumbs up or down, but below is a synopsis I was sent by Ster kinekor.

Umalusi is an introspective riches to rags drama about a spoilt brat, Malusi Mati (Sivu Nobongoza) who has to learn life’s lessons the hard way. Having spent most of his life living in the sleepy coastal city of East London (South Africa) life up to this point has been a breeze for the flamboyant young man. Malusi is as selfish as they come, he is the center of his perverse universe and no one else matter. The tide turns for our anti-hero when after a night of decadence he sleeps with Pearl, the eighteen Year old sister of his best mate. The night ends in tragedy when Pearl dies seemingly from a drug overdose. The extremely malevolent and coked-up Malusi leaves her on the side of the road and runs. Leaving the comfort of his cocooned life he heads for the only place he can hide, Mdanstane township. A completely alien environment for this private school graduate, Malusi is about to learn some vital lessons.....About life...
