Tumi hosts listening session for Whole Worlds

Tumi, mostly known with his band The Volume, has a new album out. Sony Music invited us to the listening session that was held at The Planetarium at Wits University on Wednesday afternoon.

Always the creative soul, the selection of the venue had lots to do with his album, aptly titled Whole Worlds. At the reception area, there were flyers with sketches and pictures of different planets stuck on the walls alongside the material from the venue, making for a smooth assimilation into the space. After having drinks and Astrios, we were led to the inside of The Planetarium.

Lance from Sony Music introduced Tumi to the media and other guests that were in attendance. As the lights went out, the excitement permeated in the air, in anticipation of this truly unique experience, at least in South Africa. Tumi took to the mic and described inspirations for each of the 4 songs he played us (helped on the decks by DJ Bionic). He relayed to us neatly-worded descriptions of how the songs came about and each and every person involved with the tracks. I instantly fell in love with each of the songs he played, especially one that features mama Sibongile Khumalo.

It was a breath-taking experience, knitting together the visuals of the planets on the roof and the powerful sounds that came from the speakers, As we left The Planetarium, we were gifted with a copy of the full album with some more Astrios as well as a remarkable booklet with amazing photography and beautifully coined words that accompanied the CD.

I played the whole CD on my way back from the listening session and with each listen, I fell more and more in love with Whole Worlds. It's an amazing piece of work that Tumi should be utterly proud of. It's hip hop music elevated into another level, only a way Tumi would make it. Whole Worlds is available at music stores nationwide now, go out and cop it.

Brian Temba showcases his indisputable talent

I hav just returned from La Toscana at Montecasino, where Brian Temba finally launched his critically acclaimed debut album to an inviting crowd. With a largely visible presence of the media, his family, other entertainers and the general public, the Pretoria-born crooner sizzled as he proved that he is giving Something Better, as far as music is concerned in Mzansi.

Arriving just minutes after he started performing, I couldn't help getting in the groove of things. Brian Temba performed most of the songs from Something Better, introducing each song with a short synopsis of what the song was about and what inspired it. Among these were the smash debut hit single Dominoes, Don't Let Me Fall, the title track Something Better and two of my most favourites, Early Morning and Better Then. Speaking of Better Then, he mentioned that although the song is dedicated to his late brother, it's also for everybody who has lost a loved one. I couldn't agree more as the moving lyrics resonate and remind you of the people in your life who have passed on. Sporadically, video clips would be played, documenting his journey through the process of creating Something Better.

Another great moment of the night was when he performed the only duet on Something Better called Where This Is Going, which he originally did with Sharlene Hector, this time belting it out with the beautiful and talented Durban singer Lungi Naidoo. It didn't end there as Brian Temba gave us a rousing rendition of the Kate Bush classic This Woman's Work, and I must mention that Kate would be as proud as she was when Maxwell covered the same song when he did his MTV Unplugged recording in '97. He continued to showcase his vocal prowess as he dabbled in short verses of some of his favourite songs from his favourite singers like Boyz II Men, Anthony Hamliton and Tevin Campbell, to name but a few. To show he hasn't forgotten his roots, he broke into a few gospel numbers he did in his hey days with outfits like Family Factory and Joyous Celebration. Moreover, it was sweet experiencing first-hand the view of relationship Brian Temba has with his business partner and friend Mandisa Makalima, who looked stunning by the way in a strapless knee-length frock.

Another noteworthy experience was the use an amazing 6-piece band, led by super producer Alexis Faku. Each band member did a sterling job in complementing Brian's indisputable voice. Activites for the night included a Montecasino-sponsored prize-giveaway where 3 very ecstatic ladies walked away with 3 dates with Brian; one having lunch at a restaurant of her choice at Montecasino, another taking to the air on an air-balloon, and the last one watching a movie of her choice at Nu Metro Montecasino.

It was a great night, filled with great music, great bunch of people and resulted in great memories. I must mention that Azania Ndoro did a superb job as a compeer for the evening. Something Better is an amazing body of work. Testimony is borne in Brian Temba being nominated twice at the Channel O Music Video Awards taking place in about 2 weeks (check out www.channelo.tv to vote). Speaking of music awards, the album is a beast, therefore I'm terribly scared of whoever will be nominated against Brian Temba at the SAMA's next year. Simphiwe Dana set to rock Soweto

The multi-award winning Afro- soul and jazz sensation, Simphiwe Dana, is billed to perform an exclusive one-only show in Soweto for the first time on the 3rd of October 2009.

Set to take place at Sedibeng, Zone 10, Meadowlands, the songstress will perform a collage of songs from her two critically and commercially acclaimed albums Zandisile and The One Love Movement On Bantu Biko Street with her band. This promises to be a special moment for both the people of Soweto and the singer herself.

The tickets will be sold at the door on the night of the event. Standard tickets cost R150 and VIP tickets (which include 3 complimetary drinks) will only set you R250. If you want to start the fun in an intimate setting, the doors open at 7pm. The show will then start at 10pm.

Just so you know, I've seen Simphiwe perform a few times and have been amazed each time. Actually, the first time was when she was introduced to the music scene performing for one of former Metro FM broadcaster, Thabo Mokwele's segments of the live shows he used to do. Tony Rich has arrived to serenade revellers at Golf Reef City thios weekend.

You may have heard a few months ago that the soulful crooner will be in the country to perform 2 exclusive shows at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino on the weekend on the 10th-11th July 2009. Well he is here, I believe he arrived a day before yesterday.

For those that are not familiar with Tony Rich or his music, he's one of the most under-rated and prolific musicians and songwriters of our lifetime. He first attracted attention as a staff writer for the Babyface- and L.A. Reid-led label La Face, churning out hits for the likes of Boyz II Men, Johnny Gill, TLC and Toni Braxton.

He then decided to mix different sounds of rock, jazz and soul music into his own music. Late in 1995, he released his hit single Nobody Knows which went all the way up to number 2 on the Billboard Charts. Under the moniker The Tony Rich Project, he released his debut album in early 1996; an album which scored him a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. He has released 5 more albums after that, included in that impressive catalogue the Nobody Knows: The Best of Tony Rich Project compilation.

The Legendary King Of Pop Is No More.

The world is reeling with shock and sadness following the news of Michael Jackson's hospitalisation, and ultimately his tragic and unexpected death; from a cardiac arrest arising from heart failure. All spectrums of the media have covered the topic in abundance and it's one on everybody lips or fingers as the whole world sends their messages of sympathy and condolences to Michael's children, family and friends.

When I received a call from one of my friends after the Bafana Bafana game against Brazil last night, I immediately texted a friend of mine from the U.S. to share what they had heard as the local radio deejays were not sure of the facts. He said the news stations were reporting that he was in cardiac arrest, but within minutes he sent back another mobile text to say they were now reporting that he had died.

I cannot begin to describe the sadness that swept through my heart when it was confirmed that he had really passed on. I instantly remembered that me and a group of friends were watching one of his live DVD's for his Bucarest tour in 1992 just last Sunday over lunch and we were talking about him and the power and the ability to capture his fans' spirits and transport them into this surreal inexplainable world of worship.

The testimony to this ability was entrenched in a joke I read about on one of my favourite blogs Panache Report, where one of the commenters revealed a true account of a young, fat girl who used to be taunted by the neighbourhood kids because of her weight. After this happened for a long time, she one day turned around to face a gigantic Michael Jackson poster she had on the wall of her bedroom and loudly emitted, "Michael Jackson, please give me strength". She then went out and whipped those kids' butts; and needless to say, those kids never bothered her again. We all laughed until the back of our heads started to ache. That's just one of the many wonderful memories I will cherish about Michael Jackson until the end of my lifetime.

All I'll say for now is, may his soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans throughout the world, who are all feeling different variations of pain, sadness and sorrow right now. We need to celebrate his life and most importantly the precious treasure he left behind, his music. His legacy will live on forever and stay unparalleled with any other entertainer who has braced this world. He was a trully phenomenal talent. He was trully THE BEST. R.I.P. Micahel Jackson.

Levi’s® Vintage Sundays tenure for June ends

The Mother City gears up to to the final stage in the ever-popular Levi’s® Vintage Sundays local music showcase for this month.

On the final Sunday in June – the 28th – Jade Lounge plays host to another trio of excellence. Starting things off is Farryl Purkiss, the man with a golden voice and heartfelt guitar performances who’s going to show exactly why he spends most of his time on the road gigging. He’s followed by Tina Schouw, the singer and songwriter whose eclectic taste and intuitive ear have seen her collaborate with dancers, poets and thespians.


Ending the night, and Levi’s® Vintage Sundays’ June run, is Simon van Gend, a guitarist and singer whose depth and insight are matched only by his unique, catchy take on folk and rock. It’s going to be a grand finale to a spectacular opening month with more to come in July.

Cape Town Internation Jazz Festival: Profiling Jonathan Butler and Incognito

We started a feature last week where we are profiling some of the artists performing at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, leading to the spectacular festival. Our latest profile features our very own international guitar maestro, Jonathan Butler, as well as UK's funky and jazzy outfit Incognito. I decided to pair these two bands because over the weekend I had an absolute pleasure of watching their respective live performances on their latest DVD's that should be out at stores now or soon, thanks to Sheer Music.

Jonathan Butler needs no introduction, really. He's more than honed his skills as a songwriter, singer and guitarist for decades and this is evident in the live DVD that was recorded in South Africa towards the end of 2007, simply and aptly titled Jonathan Butler Live In South Africa. What made my watching of the DVD more special and fulfilling was the fact that I was actually part of the audience during the recording on that beautiful evening at The Venue in Melrose Arc. I even managed to spot my self for a brief half-second, but I digress. The size of the venue created a great sense of intimacy and warm ambience. The actual performance was top notch, with Butler belting out most of his history-making hits since the advent of his career.

One of the many highlights was his collaboration with Mabi Thobejane on 7th Avenue, and Mandela Bay. Mabi excelled in his role as a traditional percussionist, whilst Butler did what he is famous for on both guitar and vocals. The rest of the band equally shined, providing concrete support to Butler. There are a few skits where Butler takes us through more than just his music, in a few showing us where he grew up and reminiscing on those early humble beginnings. For years, one of my favourite songs from the Cape Town-born musical genius has been I'm On My Knees, and will probably remain so for a very long time. Therefore I was ecstatic that he performed the romantic ballad, with many others that follow in my favourites list; like Sarah Sarah, Lies and his unsullied rendition of the Bob Marley classic, No Woman No Cry.

The experience Butler's progression from young Cape Town boy to the international superlative and respected musician, get Jonathan Butler Live In South Africa. You'll indubitably be moved by the magic seeping from that wonderful moment in our arts and culture heritage where many other notable names in our different industries were present.


Incognito

Having entertained masses for a very long time, it's only fitting that Incognito present their fans with a wonderful gift of their golden sounds packaged into a live DVD. It took a show at the Java Jazz Festival staged in Jarkarta, Indonesia last year to have the benefit of enjoying their inimitable plethora of music. And to say they brought the house down is an understatement as the audience couldn't get enough.

In a band or group environment, you usually get at least 1 person that shines and overshadows others. However, that is not the case with the eccletic band made up of members from different parts of the world, including Africa (the originator and band leader Jean-Paul Bluey Maunick, affectionately known only as Bluey, is from Mauritius). Although they sound magnificent as a collective, each member is given an equal chance to shine on their solos, whether it's on vocals, or the horns or the piano or bass guitar or drums. That ability to show such remarkable presence in such a huge band takes a lot of strength and confident in your talents, therefore each and every member in the band is laudable for the great work they contribute to the British band. Not to mention the energy displayed with such comfortability and ease.

Their wholesome ability to display copious amounts of emotion in their sets also intensifies their substance as musicians. This results in an irresistible and moving repetoire, from the dynamic funky tunes, to the memorable soul ballads, to the gospel-laced numbers transformed into easy party grooves. These qualities put them above their counterparts in the jazz and soul genre. The mere knack for interpreting new music, at the same time inspiring with their versatility is really amazing.

The live DVD will be released in May 2009 in South Africa, so look out for it at the music shops. If you don't get to see them when they are here in a few weeks, this should be more than enough consolation.

Legendary Madala Kunene gives Durban a taste of his Magic

Iconic musician Madala Kunene is no stranger to the jazz music fraternity and it is with immense disappointment that we don't get see his name as frequently in the lineups of big jazz festivals and concerts. I believe though that if promoters and other organisers could give him more support, this may change, however late it may be.

The people I'm referring to are such souls as Neil Comfort, of Artslink, who has fought tirelessly to give a platform to South African musicians, mostly the ones from KwaZulu Natal, to showcase their impressive talents. One such musician is Madala Kunene who will be serenading jazz and music lovers at large, with his moving and superb talent at a concert planned for tomorrow, 06 March 2009 at The Playhouse.

Madla Kunene will be headlining a once-off show at the Zulu Jazz Lounge at The Playhouse (on Smith Street) tomorrow night. The doors open at 7pm and the tickets cost just R60. For bookings, call 031 3042373. Don't miss out, it's promising to be a sizzling show.

Lalah Hathaway is Daddy's Little Girl all the way through

Last week I heard some rumblings that Lalah Hathaway might be coming through to the country for some type of music festival. It was in the same breath that I was given an opportunity to conduct an interview with her. The plans went full swing in motion, and this morning, I got the chance to speak with the beautiful, sultry and velvet-voiced songstress. Here is some of what we chatted about:

As soon as someone mentions your name, your father springs into mind. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of people too saying you remind them of your great late father. How does that make you feel?

It is a great honour to be mentioned in the breathe as my father. There is nobody else I'd rather be associated with. That actually makes me very happy and gives me a sense of pride.

One of your songs that further cemented your position in the music industry was your rendition of the Luther Vandross classic, Forever, For Always, For Love. Knowing Luther as one of the most prolific and outstanding vocalists to ever brace this world, were you at all nervous about pulling it off?

I was very concerned about making it feel good. I wanted it to be a personal love letter to him, as one of my influences. Of course, I was nervous initially, but I take pride in what I do. So many people ahve covered songs before and most of the time it doesn't work because it's sometimes hard to apporach such great songs. However, if there is enough conviction and passion, it's easier to accomplish what you want to achieve.

I just heard last week that you might be coming to the country and this week your inclusion into the line-up was confirmed. Have you ever been to South Africa before? If not what are your expectations?

Not that I know of. Nobody has approached me yet, but I would love to do it. I have heard many positive stories about South Africa, but have never been there before.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo scoop yet another Grammy

Although somewhat low-profile than before, the Grammy Awards took place this past Sunday and our very own accapella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo walked away with yet another Grammy. This is their 3rd Grammy, following their victories in 1987 and 2005. They won in the category Best Traditional World Music Album for their tribute album aptly titled Ilembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu.

Although another South African outfit, Soweto Gospel Choir, was just shy away from also collecting third Grammy in 3 successive years, it's good to know they lost to their own country. Ladysmith Black Mambazo are really a musical force to be reckoned with, globally. Seeing them perform at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival a few years ago, as well as at a Gallo Music showcase last year, were both memorable experiences.

Congratulations to Mshengu and his boys. Well done Baba, we will always be rooting for you. We are looking forward to more Grammy's in the future, you have proven you can do it again and again.

Music Reviews: DJ Mobi and Jazzanova

Mzansi music talent growth is really undisputable. Just yesterday I got a chance to listen to a young DJ's original and new house music brewed right here at home. Below is the review of his debut album, as well as a band called Jazzanova whose music I was introduced to just recently.

DJ Mobi - Club Kulcha

A freshman to the house music scene, DJ Mobi's effort on his debut album doesn't reflect this at all. Perhaps it's because the young DJ, producer, songwriter and sound engineer hailing from East London has been honing his skills for a while. Aptly titled Club Kulcha, the album showcases his sterling composition, writing and mixing skills.

I've always gleefully revelled in house music with vocals, so tunes like the piano-laced Shake Dance, featuring Pearl Shongwe on vocals; the easy-flowing and beautifully crafted This Feeling, with Mthwawelanga Nkonzo and Zikhona Miso alternating on the charming vocals (this one is set to rock clubs because of it's very catchy nature); and the bouncy Never Let Me Go, with Sthembiso Khoza lending his haunting vocals; all became my instant favourites. Coincidentally, all these tunes feature Thulani Lekhuleni on keys, who strums the black and white buttons so effortlessly.

Othr noteworthy tracks include album opener Back To The Future with that consistent and precise rhythm, as well as Call For Freedom, which sees DJ Mobi assist Tinyiko Mathebula in the chanting-like vocals. DJ Mobi cruises from one track to another seamlessly, making his mixing top notch. This is evident from song to song in the 13-track project.

DJ Mobi also needs to be commended for the fact that he composed and created his own music and style. It's easy for house music DJ's to put out a compilation of some other people's work and call it a day. I appreciate his vision and the showcase of his passion in elevating our Mzansi music heritage. More DJ's need to learn from this young man. Club Kulcha is sure to warm up dance floors this festive season and beyond.

Jazzanova - Of All the Things

Looking at the name of the band and the album cover, I had no idea what to expect from Jazzanova's album titled Of All The Things. The German-based DJ/producer collective's latest project sees them explore the fusion of jazz, house and even hip hop sounds more freely, creating an enjoyable chillout jazzy house feel. The live instruments add more substance to the body of work the 6-member outfit has crafted this time around.

The vocals from different vocalists around the world, coupled with exceptional song-writing is another strong point of the album. Vocalists Phonte (who also raps on one of the tracks), Paul Randolph, Jose James, Joe Duke, Bembe Segue and Dwele (whose music I fell in love with since his introduction to the music scene with the commercially un-released Rize project), just to name a few, all provide an impeccable backdrop against which the music thrives. It's really difficult to select the best songs because each has an unique element that will gnaw on my mind long after listening to the song.

However, because I'm biased towards Dwele since I'm more familiar with his music, I would have to say he took my breath away with his smooth background vocals on Rockin' You Eternally, which also features an equally brilliant vocalist named Leon Ware. Another outstanding track is Morning Scapes, a very mellow and jazzy tune showcasing a poignant flute piece accompanying Bembe Segue's raspy vocals.

Of All the Things is a feast of great quality music. From vocals to the writimg, to actual production of the music, to the harmonies, it's all blended so well that you can't help its infectious nature. Jazzanova truly have a winner in this album. I'm just a bit mad that only now I get to listen to such refreshing music from this band. But, I'll definitely be on the look out for their previous and future stuff. This is no exaggeration, you'll be bowled over by the level of overall substance in the music on Of All The Things.

Initial artist line-up announced for Cape Town International Festival

Jazz and overall music lovers, you'll be excited to learn that the first part of the 2009 Cape Town International Jazz Festival line-up has been announced and boasts an impressive assortment of artists from aroung the globe already. To this end, this is your cue to start preparing for this jazz music spectacular that lights up Cape Town annually in the first quater of the year. And what with the festival celebrating 10 years of success in the staging of the world-renowned production.

Aleardy confirmed on the bill for what is dubbed as Africa's Grandest Gathering are artists such as Zap Mama, Dianne Reeves, Hugh Masekela, Freshlyground, Peter White, Ringo Madlingozi, The Loading Zone and Incognito, to mention just a few. From looking at this short list I can already see who I'll definitely be flying to Cape Town for. I've been a great fan of Incognito, Dianne Reeves, The Stylistics and of course Hugh Masekela and Freshlyground. The J&B® DJ Dreamteam welcomes new member

The campaign run by J&B® has almost come full-circle. You may remember this exciting campaign known as the J&B® Start A Party that put together a DJ dream team from Mzansi's cream of the crop in this profession. You may also remember that after the 10 DJ's were announced, other wannabee jockeys were given a chnace to submit their self-produced tracks and the public invited to vote at www.jbscotch.co.za, to decide who they felt had the skills to be named amongst the best in the industry.

Well, that skillful beatsmith has been selected. Ian, who calls himself DJ Iancredible (see first picture above), will be joining the likes of Fistaz, Oskido, Blackcoffee, Lady Lea, Euphonik, and Fresh, to name a few, to complete the J&B® DJ Dreamteam. After successful staging of the J&B® Start A Party events in Jozi and Cape Town, the fun still continues. The DJ's are busy churning the beats for the tracks to be included in the compilation album that will be released at the end of January 2009.

To those who cast their votes and those that attended the two parties, your support is greatly appreciated. I attended the Jozi leg of the party and is was absolutely awesome. The DJ I wanted to see more than anybody else was Blackcoffee, after the last time seeing him do what he does best at the after party to the SAMA's about 2 years ago. And he didn't disappoint, especially after my turning back from the gate as he arrived at the venue. I had a brief chat with him as he rushed into the DJ booth and rocked the audience.

Jozi and The Game rock at The Road to MAMA's

We are just a few days away from the very first ever MTV African Music Awards with Zain, taking place in Abuja, Nigeria on the 22nd of November 2008. Leading to the big event, MTV has been staging shows dubbed Road To MAMA's continentally since last Tuesday. On Thursday was our turn to experience the thrill after their stop in the DRC. On the Mzansi lineup was controversial U.S. rapper The Game, accompanied by our own sizzling hip hop outfit, Jozi; part South African and part American soul singer Goapele; local rockers The Parlotones and Cassette; as well as another local hip hop giant HHP.

Earlier in the day I attended the press conference paneled by, amongst others, MTV Networks Africa Senior Vice President and Managing Director Alex Okosi, who is always such a pleasure to talk with because of his humility and friendly nature; Zain's Marketing Director, Gill (sorry, can't remember her surname); and the artists Goapele, Les and Bongani from Jozi (with Ishmael making a late appearance), Khan from The Parlotones and Zambian volcalist, Danny. The headliner, The Game, was there too, only towards the end of the conference as he was dismally late. The press conference was started without him, 1 and a half hour after the scheduled time. What's even more sad is that once he stormed in, with an entourage of more than 10 people, everybody else on the panel seemed to have been forgotten by the media that posed questions.

I must say I was very impressed with the way he handled the questions though, speaking very eloquently. He touched on a few topics, amongst them mentioning his experience in the DRC, addressing why he brought such a large entourage, as well as his views on how people have lost the definition or meaning of rap beefs. The Game emphasised how important it is to surround yourself with friends and family, resulting in bringing his friends to share his African experience. He also made mention of his rivalry with Dr. Dre, uttering that he hasn't spoken or seen his "mentor" in over a year. He added, "Dre abondoned me. And if he were to ask me to appear on Detox, I would decline".

The array of subjects that The Game touched on also included his views on President Elect Barack Obama, congratulating and comparing his election triumph to that of Mandela's in 1994. Raising eyebrows in the room, he gleefully quipped, "I have killed and fought to survive", when he was asked about some of the challenges he has gone through in his life. He emphasised, however, that he is not proud of those experiences of his life.

Jozi also talked about their journey since bursting into the music scene about 3 years ago. Bongani seemed very emotional and lost for words whenever he spoke about his mother Brenda Fassie. With the recent passing of the legendary Miriam Makeba, many spoke about her achievements and how they are willing to honour her legacy. Alex Okosi excitedly announced, "We are planning on acknowledging Mama Africa during the awards show. It's a pity that this happened at this stage of the preparations because we would have loved to do more. But, there are more ceremonies to come in the future."

Later than evening, we were treated to just a taste of what's in store for the actual awards ceremony this coming Saturday. Danny opened the bill, followed by HHP, who always mesmerizes me with his live sets. Although all their performances were quite short, due to time constraints, my highlight for the night has to be Jozi, who have shown a great deal of growth since their introduction into the music scene. Their performances are always so energetic, thrilling and sincerely entertaining. They brought out a Nigerian group of dancers when their set began, exciting the audiences with their bold and interesting moves. It wasn't just their moves that left the crowds gasping for more, but their engaging interaction with their audience.

I need to utter my disappointment in the crowd's reaction to Goapele's performance. They seemed bored and detached from what was going on. However, I must also point out that it was mostly a hip hop crowd present and probably couldn't relate to the type of music she does. It was only at the end when she did her smash hit Closer, that the crowd seemed to warm up and sing along, but it was too late since that was her closing tune. The Parlotones and Cassette also gave it their all, sampling all their greatest hits we have come to love from both the groups. The Game, the headline act, also did the same. He rapped on songs that have made him popular, from his G-Unit days to the present. Although at times a bit cynical (like taking unwarranted stabs at his former G-Unit frontman 50 Cent), he held it down and gave a great performance. Apparently, me and a friend missed out on a great treat from a 7-year old Soweto boy who stole the show at the end of The Game's set, because we ran out just before the end to avoid the traffic out of the venue.

It was a great evening, filled with loads of entertanimnet. I didn't even chill at the VIP suites because all the fun was down there in front of the stage. The Road To Mama's continues in Zambia and Nigeria this week, before the spectacular finale planned for Nigeria on Saturday. Those that are lucky will get to experience what we did last Thursday and even more at the MTV African Music Awards with Zain on the 22nd of November 2008 in Nigeria. Fun and awareness goes together at Levi’s® Rage for the Revolution Concert

This past Saturday saw an assortment of people enjoying themselves in a conscious and positive show dubbed Levi’s® Rage for the Revolution, spearheaded by the iconic clothing brand Levi’s®. The annual HIV/AIDS campaign withstood a few minor glitches, like the terrible rainy weather, and few technical fallaces, to a sounding success. And succeed it did as young people rejoiced and had fun whilst educating themselves about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and how to stay positive whether infected or affected. Helping spread the gospel were entertainers including Tidal Waves, Malaika, aKing, Ntando, L'Vovo, Flat Stanley, and DJ's Euphonik and Oskido.

It was entertainment galore as people of different cultures and backgrounds gathered to support an initiative that is very much needed in curbing this monster disease. Every musician that graced the stage had a message of support, sympathy, and compassion, whether relayed through their music or literal utterances. Da Les, the MC for the event, played his part too with his positive and encouraging words, even giving us a mini-performance during one of the breaks.

My highlight for the day has to be Tidal Waves (there were amazing with their authentic and smooth reggae sounds), L'Vovo (I finally got to understand why people go crazy over him and his music, he has such charm and appeal when he does his thing on stage), Malaika (wow, a world class performance from you, especially enjoyed Bongani doing Marvin Gaye's classic Sexual Healing, the brother can really sing - don't go solo though, both of you, you are fine just the way you are, LOL) and a group of brass and drum players that took the venue by storm during the breaks. It was so moving seeing the audience join these guys, singing and dancing to what was played through the horns. There were also a group of "magicians" taking turns amusing us with their tricks. The organisers need to be greatly commended and praised for that idea because we were never bored. If a musician was setting up for their performance, there was always something to occupy you, in terms of entertainment. I can't imagine what it would have been like during those glitches mentioned above if they didn't have such a contingency plan.

Overall, it was a fun-filled day. Not only about fun, but with a strong focus on awareness about a subject that has scarred the world over. Thank you Speakerscorner and Levi’s® for inviting us to share such an occasion. Melanie and Alison, you ladies are both stars shining bright (by the way, your son is so handsome Alison, and he is going to be great when he grows up, could gather from the pictures you showed me).

Continuing on the awareness trail, if you are having sexual relations, please go and get tested. It may sound like a cliche, but it's real and is the only truth, it's better knowing your status than dying in the dark. I don't mean to preach, but we have lost too many of our young potential heroes to HIV/AIDS, and we can only beat it by making a stand, just like Levi’s® is doing.

Lala Ngoxolo Mama Africa!

The world is reeling with the shocking news of the passing away of the legendary icon Miriam Makeba. Affectionately known to the world as Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba passed away early on Monday morning, shortly after performing in Italy. The first time I learnt about the sad news was yesterday as CNN ran their afternoon headlines.

The early and late evening local broadcast stations also ran the story yesterday, with a full coverage on Morning Live this morning. It is such a sad time for the music fraternity and the world at large. Mama Africa will always be remembered not only for her timeless music, but for her endless goodwill efforts throughout the world. I'm glad I had a brief glimpse into her life as a performer when I saw her doing her final public appearance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival last year. The packed to capacity venue proved her iconic and legendary status as thousands of music revellers sang along to every tune she belted out.

I also have a fond memory of her rare live DVD that was recorded in 1966 at Ben's in Stolkholm, which I presented to Bab' Themba Mkhize for his 50th birthday last year. He was very excited to get such a gift, even moreso because he is related to Mama Africa by law (Bab' Themba Mkhize's eldest son is married to Mama Africa's granddaughter and singer Zenzile).

Mama Africa, we will always treasure and cherish the legacy of universal love you have bestowed upon us. May God bless you with the peace you deserve as you become one of His Angels up above. Our condolenses goes to the Makeba family and relatives, as well as close friends.
