Things are looking good for Jerusalema.

Jerusalema, the new local film starring Rapulana Seiphemo is doing well at the cinemas. It was in the top ten at the box office in its opening weekend (29 - 31 August 2008) and the word is that it is sitting at a half-a-million mark right now. I believe it would be over the million mark if it there was a print sent to the Southgate Mall theatre. Come to think of it, the film is set and shot in Soweto and Southgate is in the South, therefore would have made sense to not only open at Maponya Mall, but Southgate Mall as well. Let's blame it on the the planning. Anyway, I'm sure they've realised their mistake and rectifying this will take the film into the success it deserves.

I watched the movie about 4 weeks ago and was very impressed. The story was told and flowed very well, the acting brilliant and the casting impeccable. The Jafta and Rapulana transition (Jafta played the younger Rapulana's character, Lucky Kenene) was very smooth, almost as if it was the same person acting, and I liked that a lot. I actually had a chat with Rapulana about a week before the movie opened and he agreed with my views on the casting. He also told me that because they started shooting Jafta's parts before his, he would go to the set to learn Jafta's mannerisms and character. He also added, "The fact that I almost look like him made things easier too because I didn't have to try too hard".

Jerusalema is now at cinemas nationwide. Don't miss out, it's very real, very raw, very relatable, and thrilling too. With your buzz, we may just clinge another Oscar nomination for this one, even a win.

So You Think You Can Dance Finalists Revealed.

It's Thursday night and I've just returned from the SABC1 gig where the finalists in the So You Think You Can Dance reality dance show were announced. I'm happy with the choices the judges went with, all of the 20 competitors are extremely talented. The finalists that featured a lot of hip hop moves in their routines gathered more applauses as the videos were presented on the projector and when they were introduced to the stage. A few appealled to me as well, including Megan, who used to dance for the late Lebo Mathosa. I'm really looking forward to Saturday evening's live show where the finalists will begin their journey and fight to keep their places until the victor is crowned.

I spotted a few personalities at the gig, including the super kind buzz couple Slikour and Bonang, husband and wife Pepsi Pokane and Machere, the naturally beautiful former Miss SA Teen and Selimathunzi presenter Zizo Beda, another Selimathunzi presenter Mncediso 'Kaos' Matu (I saw the episode of City Ses'la he was featured in early this week and thought his acting was descent. What do you think, should he explore acting more?), and current Miss SA Tansey Coetzee.

I'll be posting some photos from tonight's gig as soon as I receive them. Don't forget to catch the show on Saturday evening. And if you want to be there, go to YEAHBO.DOT.NET for more details.

Tyrese following in Will Smith's shoes

I just came back from watching an action thriller film called Death Race. I wouldn't want to give too much away, but just know that it's entertaining and has one of my favourite singers/actors Tyrese Gibson. The last time I saw him was on Transformers. He stars alongside British action man Jason Statham on Death Race and he did his role justice. Think 2 Fast And 2 Furious meets Transformers, but more gruesome. The movie also has a video game feel and car racing fans will definitely get into it .

Tyrese is well on his way to being an action star himself, what with Will Smith mentoring him (he has just been announced to play black superhero Luke Cage on the movie with the same name due for release some time in 2009). He also has 2 other movies releasing next year, including the Transfomers sequel, Revenge Of The Fallen. He seems to be busy, he did say he was giving music a break to focus on his acting career, afterall. I'm certainly looking forward to what he brings out on his future projects, including his music projects.

So You Think You Can Dance? - Tickets to Give Away

Towards the end of June I was invited as a guest to the second day of the Jozi auditions for the new reality dance show So You Think You Can Dance (which airs every Saturday on SABC1 at 18:30). I had a great time and was profoundly amazed at the talent Mzansi has. I've been invited to the official launch this coming Thursday, where the top 20 finalists will be revealed. I can't wait to see who made the cut.

Anyway, you could also be a part of this amazing experience. The good peeps from SABC1 have offered me 10 pairs of tickets to give away for you to be part of the live broadcast of the show this coming Saturday, 06 September 2008. If you live in and around Jozi, head over to YEAHBO.DOT.NET for more details.

The Spinners have still got what it takes.

On Friday and Saturday, after the fashion shows, I headed to Newtown to see some of the shows scheduled for this year's Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz Festival. Amongst some of the artists I saw were RJ Benjamin, Simphiwe Dana, ASA, Doc Powell, Roy Ayers, and of course, The Spinners, who happened to be the highlight for me. I saw them on both the nights and they gave equally energetic and dynamic performances. The interaction with the audience, the dancing, the music itself, what a memorable experience. It got me thinking, if such old tymers can do that and keep performing and giving such great music, why is it the younger generation of groups and bands never last? I posed this question to Bhubesi when I saw him at the Ephymol fashion show and he told me that these guys did music for the love of it, that's why they have the staying power. What are your thoughts? Oh, Simphiwe Dana deserves a mention too, that woman bowls me over every time I see her perform. She has such a powerful voice, you just stand or sit there in amazement.

Gospel stars sizzle at Cell C Gospel Festival

Soweto has never been really one of the places I would go to chill at, but things may change after this weekend. I attended the gospel festival at SAFA Stadium on Sunday, where gospel heavyweights like Rebecca Malope, Amadodana ase Wesile, Jabu Hlongwane and more gave their all in their respective performances. I really like Vicky Vilakazi's voice and have been a fan of her work since the days of Joyous Celebration, so I was very disappointed when she was booed off the stage by fans. If she had done songs we know her from, I think it would have turned out differently. It was a nice show though, and you know Rebecca was brilliant as always. Oh, I also got a chance to see Maponya Mall for the first time, I must say I was impressed. It's a good mall, I wouldn't mind going back there again very soon.

Sanlam SA Fashion Week, just good, no electricity.

The past week has been busy and full of entertainment activities. I had a pleasure of going to a few fashion shows at the Sanlam SA Fashion Week. My highlight was sitting front row at the Ephymol and Julian Couture shows. I was very impressed with Ephraim's work on his men's collection. The shirts were smoking hot, the colours blended nicely, the designs done perfectly well, and the craftsmanship presented in awesome detail. The suits were very well tailored and fitted nicely. I'm not too sure about the pants though, they seemed to have been on the extreme side as far as design is concerned. But overall, Ephymol killed it. Let me call Ephraim now and see if he can hook me up with a few shirts.
