Music Reviews: DJ Mobi and Jazzanova

Mzansi music talent growth is really undisputable. Just yesterday I got a chance to listen to a young DJ's original and new house music brewed right here at home. Below is the review of his debut album, as well as a band called Jazzanova whose music I was introduced to just recently.

DJ Mobi - Club Kulcha

A freshman to the house music scene, DJ Mobi's effort on his debut album doesn't reflect this at all. Perhaps it's because the young DJ, producer, songwriter and sound engineer hailing from East London has been honing his skills for a while. Aptly titled Club Kulcha, the album showcases his sterling composition, writing and mixing skills.

I've always gleefully revelled in house music with vocals, so tunes like the piano-laced Shake Dance, featuring Pearl Shongwe on vocals; the easy-flowing and beautifully crafted This Feeling, with Mthwawelanga Nkonzo and Zikhona Miso alternating on the charming vocals (this one is set to rock clubs because of it's very catchy nature); and the bouncy Never Let Me Go, with Sthembiso Khoza lending his haunting vocals; all became my instant favourites. Coincidentally, all these tunes feature Thulani Lekhuleni on keys, who strums the black and white buttons so effortlessly.

Othr noteworthy tracks include album opener Back To The Future with that consistent and precise rhythm, as well as Call For Freedom, which sees DJ Mobi assist Tinyiko Mathebula in the chanting-like vocals. DJ Mobi cruises from one track to another seamlessly, making his mixing top notch. This is evident from song to song in the 13-track project.

DJ Mobi also needs to be commended for the fact that he composed and created his own music and style. It's easy for house music DJ's to put out a compilation of some other people's work and call it a day. I appreciate his vision and the showcase of his passion in elevating our Mzansi music heritage. More DJ's need to learn from this young man. Club Kulcha is sure to warm up dance floors this festive season and beyond.

Jazzanova - Of All the Things

Looking at the name of the band and the album cover, I had no idea what to expect from Jazzanova's album titled Of All The Things. The German-based DJ/producer collective's latest project sees them explore the fusion of jazz, house and even hip hop sounds more freely, creating an enjoyable chillout jazzy house feel. The live instruments add more substance to the body of work the 6-member outfit has crafted this time around.

The vocals from different vocalists around the world, coupled with exceptional song-writing is another strong point of the album. Vocalists Phonte (who also raps on one of the tracks), Paul Randolph, Jose James, Joe Duke, Bembe Segue and Dwele (whose music I fell in love with since his introduction to the music scene with the commercially un-released Rize project), just to name a few, all provide an impeccable backdrop against which the music thrives. It's really difficult to select the best songs because each has an unique element that will gnaw on my mind long after listening to the song.

However, because I'm biased towards Dwele since I'm more familiar with his music, I would have to say he took my breath away with his smooth background vocals on Rockin' You Eternally, which also features an equally brilliant vocalist named Leon Ware. Another outstanding track is Morning Scapes, a very mellow and jazzy tune showcasing a poignant flute piece accompanying Bembe Segue's raspy vocals.

Of All the Things is a feast of great quality music. From vocals to the writimg, to actual production of the music, to the harmonies, it's all blended so well that you can't help its infectious nature. Jazzanova truly have a winner in this album. I'm just a bit mad that only now I get to listen to such refreshing music from this band. But, I'll definitely be on the look out for their previous and future stuff. This is no exaggeration, you'll be bowled over by the level of overall substance in the music on Of All The Things.

Darkie clothing arrives in Jozi.

Over the years I have become a huge fan of the clothing line Darkie. Back when I started writing for YEAHBO.DOT.NET, the label head designer and creater Themba Mngomezulu was one of the first people I interviewed (check the interview HERE). This was way back when he was still based in Durban. The clothing label has gradually grown from strength to strength, rejuvenating itself with fresh and original ideas.

Fast forwarding to 2008. Earlier this year when I was in Cape Town for the annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival I got to hang out with one of my friends TK (see first picture with guy in brown pants above), who works very closely with Themba, at a Darkie shop on Long Street (read about the the encounter HERE). The shop has since moved to Kloof Street in a form of a new refurbished Darkie Concept shop. Whilst launching this shop, Themba reached out to me to help with his plans in branching out to Jozi as well. Being a great fan of his work, as well as a friend I took to the challenge which has seen an opening of a new Darkie shop this past Friday. The Jozi shop is located on 7th Street in Mellville. The opening of the shop last Friday was really dope. Of course I was there with a few other people that came through to celebrate one of Themba's milestones.

On our way from the airport last Friday, Themba told me that there are plans for Durban to get their own exclusive Darkie shop as well. So Durbanites, your own shop will be opening soon. Check out www.darkieclothing.co.za for details on that front. In the meantime, Jozi and Cape Town are basking in the enjoyment of shopping for exclusive pieces of clothing from the Darkie summer collections. You'll be bowled over by the quality of design and craftmanship that goes into each and every item.

Please also note that Themba is bringing back the Darkie Recycled clothing (example on the first photo) that made him popular when he began working on his passion for fashion design. Watch the space for this development and more details.

They say 3 is a charm, it certainly was with Vicky Christina Barcelona, Bolt: 3D and Australia

The topic of this post has just made me chuckle because I just realised it's very confusing and ambiguous. But, don't worry, you'll know what it's all about right about now.

Yesterday I watched 3 movies and all these movies were brilliant. Well the first and last one, although the second one was great too. Earlier in the day I saw Woody Allen's latest film titled Vicky Christina Barcelona, then later on had a great 3D experience with the animated movie Bolt: 3D. The day finished on a high with the prepiere of Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman's new film called Australia. Here is what my thoughts are on all the 3 movies:

Vicky Christina Barcelona

It's an undisputed fact that Woody Allen is somewhat of a genius in his line of work, especially on the helm as a director. He's proven this fact once more on his latest outstanding piece of art that takes you through a memorable journey of his signature conventional and classic filmmaking. Boarsting a notable lineup of huge and well-accomplished names like Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Patricia Clarkson and Javier Bardem, Vicky Christina Barcelona delivers on aspects of quality filmmaking. The perfect combination of simple directing, great acting, interesting story, breathtaking scenery, engaging dialogue, an awesome wardrobe, and not forgeting to mention how sexy Spanish sounds rolling off their tongues, makes for breathtaking viewing and listening.

Set in Barcelona, in Spain, the story revolves around the lives of 2 American friends, Vicky and Christina (played by Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson, respectively) in search of the meaning of their lives during a vacation in the beautiful city of Barcelona. They have no idea what is in store for them as they meet an attractive, suave and charming recently divorced painter Juan Antonio (played exceptionally well by Javier Bardem). Although Scarlett and Rebecca were wonderful in their respective performances, it is Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem that steal the show with their easy flowing, but flawed characters as a dysfunctional couple. The serious and some taboo topics tackled in the film are also done sensitively, yet in a candid manner. Vicky Christina Barcelona is one of the best films to come out this year and I wouldn't be surprised at all if the film is featured in the Academy Awards nominations for 2009.

Vicky Christina Barcelona opens at cinemas nationwide on the 02nd of January 2009.

Bold: 3D

John Travolta is back on the silver screen, not playing his usual macho-man roles, or as a made-up mother in a musical, but voicing a superdog in the new animated Bolt: 3D, completely done in 3-dimentional technology. Bolt is a dog starring in a successful fictional sci-fi/action television show who has no idea that his superpowers are not real. Completely oblivious to the fact that this is so far from reality, he learns the hard way as he tries to save Penny (played by the young Hannah Montana star Miley Cirus), his "human", from the wrath of the show's literal green-eyed monster. As his journey of discovery and quest to save the only friend he ever knew unfolds, he enlists the help Rhino the hamster and Mittens the bully cat, who both share dissimilar views to life.

This may sound like a broken record, but I'm not really an animated movie kind of person. However, the movie is enjoyable for its story and the 3D technology used in its creation. Moreover, the humour was quite impressive, especially Mark Walton voicing Rhino. I believe this role would have fit Jack Black very perfectly too, but Mark excelled in bringing the character to what it is. His one-line jab and enthusiastic and rather sinister look to life made the charater even more interesting. This animation should be great family viewing over the holidays. Even more so for the kids as they will gleefully revel in wearing the 3D goggles. Oh, and the duet in the end of the movie by John Travolta and Miley Cirus was not bad.

Bolt: 3D hits Ster Kinekor cinemas throughout the country the day after Christmas, 26th of December 2008

Australia

My evening was capped off with a premiere of Australia, an aptly titled movie showcasing country's history and landscape beauty. Leading the cast are Australian born actors Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, who couldn't have been the more perfectly cast as their on-screen chemistry shone through.

Australia looks at a part of the life of an English aristocrat who inherits a ranch full of cattle. With a plot by locals to take over the cattle station, she rides miles and miles with an edgy stock-man to avoid the takeover, only to face the bombing of Australia's Darwin province by Japanese forces who had bombed Pearl Harbour not long ago. Added with a witness of ugly Australian history where mixed-race children were outcast, she does her best to bring about change in the country that not only basks in their conventional stereotypes, but also their lack of prominent leadership.

Although a bit lengthly, 15 minutes short of 3 hours to be exact, Australia will keep you on the edge of your sit with it's riveting action. It will also keep you in awe because of its beautiful cinematography. In addition, the emotions that it evokes peek a magnetic interest to the story. That's why even though you will feel the length, but you'll not fall asleep or get bored. A lot of people have said that Nicole Kidman is not good at acting, but I feel she is a descent actress. I really enjoyed her range in her role in Australia, shifting from playfulness to being dramatic and everything inbewteen. It should also be notted that the chemistry between her and Hugh Jackman was very intense, thus resulting in a credible performance. Another highlight for me was the sterling performance of Brendan Walters, who played the coloured boy Nullah. He was so natural and believable in his character, telling a very important story in the history of Australia.

Australia is an absolutely lovely piece of work. And in many ways its history is very similar to that of South Africa. Even the landscape, I saw many places that reminded me of the remarkable scenes of beauty I have seen travelling around our very own country. If you have a keen interest in that and drama filled with comedic moments, you'll certainly enjoy Australia. the movie opens at Nu Metro cinemas around the country, also on Day Of Reconciliation, 26 December 2008.

The J&B® DJ Dreamteam welcomes new member

The campaign run by J&B® has almost come full-circle. You may remember this exciting campaign known as the J&B® Start A Party that put together a DJ dream team from Mzansi's cream of the crop in this profession. You may also remember that after the 10 DJ's were announced, other wannabee jockeys were given a chnace to submit their self-produced tracks and the public invited to vote at www.jbscotch.co.za, to decide who they felt had the skills to be named amongst the best in the industry.

Well, that skillful beatsmith has been selected. Ian, who calls himself DJ Iancredible (see first picture above), will be joining the likes of Fistaz, Oskido, Blackcoffee, Lady Lea, Euphonik, and Fresh, to name a few, to complete the J&B® DJ Dreamteam. After successful staging of the J&B® Start A Party events in Jozi and Cape Town, the fun still continues. The DJ's are busy churning the beats for the tracks to be included in the compilation album that will be released at the end of January 2009.

To those who cast their votes and those that attended the two parties, your support is greatly appreciated. I attended the Jozi leg of the party and is was absolutely awesome. The DJ I wanted to see more than anybody else was Blackcoffee, after the last time seeing him do what he does best at the after party to the SAMA's about 2 years ago. And he didn't disappoint, especially after my turning back from the gate as he arrived at the venue. I had a brief chat with him as he rushed into the DJ booth and rocked the audience.

Look out for the album when it comes out at the end of January next year. And, keep it locked here for information on more parties as you already know we'll keep you on the loop regarding the J&B® DJ Dreamteam album launch parties that are sure to thrill fans throughout the country.

Rachel Getting Married is a dose of Reality.

Watching the trailer of the Anne Hathaway's new film, I didn't expect it to take the direction it did. Rachel Getting Married is filled with a combination of humour, sadness, compassion and adulation.

The story is about a troubled young woman, Kim (played by Anne Hathaway) who travels home from a rehab centre to attend her sisters wedding. As the festivities of the weekend begin, the joy and laughter that should be laced into such a glorious occassion turns into anger and heartbreak. This, because of the family dynamics that creep through years of dysfunction and guilt, particularly from Kim, who accidentally killed their baby brother when she was a drug-strung teenager. I believe the intention of the filmmakers was to portray how weddings have a tendency to not go according to how they are planned, most of the times anyway. I appreciated the normalcy of the whole film, from the use of a hand-held camera (evident from the non-steady motion of the pictures), to the speeches at the wedding rehearsal (which many seemed to have been improvised).

I also appreciated the ability to lighten things up when the story got too heavy. For example, the dishwasher scene when the father and soon-to-be son-in-law were competing, although in the end it took things back to the serious matters that the family failed to really deal with head on. Another one of those light moments was the music which seemed to have a great influence in the film. What I was annoyed with though was the over-compensation of the music at the wedding reception, it lingered on until I just wanted for them to get back to the story. In defense of this music oversaturation, it could be because the director, Jonathan Demme, is a great fan of Neil Young (evidenced by a few songs featured including Sydney - the groom - singing a Neil Young song when his part of his vows came). Also, Tunde Adebimpe (who plays Sydney) is a part of a band called T.V. on the Radio.

Speaking of Tunde, I think he played his part very werll, although it was annoying how he didn't have much dialogue in the beginning when you expected him to say something. Anne did very well in her role too, veering away from her usual dolled-up roles in movies like Devil Wears Prada and Get Smart, to name just a couple. The rest of the cast did a sterling job too in bringing their different characters to complement the story. I noticed that Dorian Missick had a small part in Rachel Getting Married, leading me to believe that Demme enjoys working with him since he also appeared on another of his films, The Manchurian Candidate. Another highlight for me was seeing former American Idol contestant Tamyra Gray making a cameo and singing at the wedding rehearsal, she's such a talented singer. Speaking of singing, there was a bevy of different genres of music and related activities, bringing forth a spectacle of multiculturalism.

Rachel Getting Married is a great piece of work, real and authentic. You can actually relate to the story and what is presented on the screen, unlike some fantasy stories we have been sbjected to these days. Besides from lingering on, on certain scenes unneccessarily, the overall intention was achieved.

Rachel Getting Married will be released at Ster Kinekor cinemas nationwide on the 13th of March next year.

Jozi walk away with an MTV African Music gong for Best Live act

Abuja in Nigeria was the place to be this past weekend as the inaugural MTV African Music Awards with Zain went down. The assortment of winners and performers for the night also proved that the African spirit and unity were alive and well. This resulted in the ceremony enjoying a thunderous success.

It seems Les' cries were head (well, not precisely so) as Jozi walked away with the award for Best Live act. Many may remember when the one third of the energetic hip hop outfit made headlines criticising South Africans for not voting in awards that require the public votes. I'm extremely excited and feel they more than deserve the accollade as they are absolutely the best in their live performances. Other South Africans that put the country on the map were the rockers Seether who took the golden mic for Best Alternative ensemble. Also, it's said that the most poignant moment of the night was when MTV paid homage to two of Africa's most treasured legends, including Mama Africa Miriam Makeba, who passed away just a few weeks before the awards ceremony.

The biggest winner of the night at the first ever MTV African Music Awards with Zain was Nigerian music extraordinaire D'Banj. He scooped the statuettes for Best Male, Artist Of the Year and Viewer's Choice categories. Other winners included Kenya's Wahu as Best Female for the night; Alicia Keys crowned for Best R&B (award accepted by my wife in my head :-), Kelly Rowland on Alicia's behalf), as well another of the most coveted categories Best Group, which was awarded to Nigerian twin-duo P Square.

The performances wing of the awards is said to have been sizzling hot too, with an electrifying collaboration between Kelly Rowland and D'Banj; an intense dance-off between P Square and Jozi; a soulful delivery by Paris-based Nigeria's Asa; as well as a thrilling showcase by FloRida and The Game. Apparently, other noteworthy highlights included sterling perfromances from HHP, 9ice, Cassette, Jua Cali, Naeto C, Ikechukwu and Fela Kuti's (who was honoured with MAMA Legend award) son Sean Kuti accompanied by his father's band Egypt 80.

It sounds like it was a memorable night and a great beginning for the MTV African Music Awards with Zain. We can only hope that it grows bigger and better. Alex Okosi did mention at a press conference in Jozi during the Road to MAMA's tour that the awards ceremony will be taken around the continent, so I'm waiting with excitement for Mzansi's turn in the next few years.

If you missed out on all the festivities, please tune into MTVbase in the next few days as I'm sure Sizwe and Fikile will bring you snippets behind the velvet rope of the MAMA's.

Madagascar animals take a journey to Africa

Jada Pinkett-Smith, Ben Stiller, and Chris Rock are just a few of the stars that have been on a heavy promotion trail for their new kid's animated movie Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, judjing by the pictures I've seen of the 3 of them taken from different countries throughout the world. This is the sequel to the record-setting 2005 animation Madagascar, which releases at cinemas in Mzansi next week.

I've always mentioned that I'm not a big animated movie fan, but I do indulge in the genre every now and then, especially if there is a big blockbuster like Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa bracing our cinemas. This morning was one of those moments when I watched the movie at a press screening. The movie was enjoyable and actually surprised me because of its nature to attract not just children's attention but also engage adults in the heart-warming story, as well as the clever thinking behind portrayal of the characters.

The New York Zoo friends, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo are back together is this entertaining journey of mystery, laughter, sadness and jealousy. Played by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett-Smith, respectively, they end up in the wilderness of Africa where they re-unite with their families and have their relationships introspectively tested. Their sense of humility and humanity, helps them conquer whatever hardships are thrown their way, whether it relates to love, friendship or family.

The late Bernie Mac was outstanding, doing the voice of Zuba, Alex's father. Sherri Shepherd (from the talk show The View) also did a sterling job as the mother, though it was very interesting that the parents were both voiced by black actors but the child by a white actor. Another surprising moment was musician Will.I.Am's performance, doing Moto Moto's voice and playing Gloria's love interest. He carried the role very well. On the downside, I noticed some sort of a goof, in terms of consistency. Alex supposedly had the same birth mark (an African map) on his paws as his father, but this mark was absent on some of the scenes.

Overall, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa was enjoyable. I enjoyed the elaborate humour and the way your emotions were evoked in different parts throughout the film. It's also a great story about family, friendships and basically maintaining good relationships in life. The whole family will enjoy this film. I'll definitely be taking my little sister to watch it again during the holidays.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa opens at cinemas nationwide on the 05th of December 2009.

SWOP to take Mzansi film industry by storm

Today will see the launch and release of the new local comedy SWOP. Directed by silver and big screen magnet Hlomla Dandala, and starring the likes of Kabelo "KB" Ngakane and Audrey Pooe, SWOP will show South African film making in the light you've never seen it before.

Speaking with Blaque magazine for their cover feature last month, Hlomla praised the way the Nigerians have catapulted their Nollywood film industry with a string of their successful films. He suggested that South Africans follow in the same footsteps, making films for us, and not for sole recognition of other markets. That's exactly what he has directed his energy towards at the helm of his debut feature film.

I'll be attending the premiere tonight and will do a review after seeing it. I'll also be interviewing Hlomla and one of the lead actors (Aubrey) in the next few days. Keep your eyes and ears open.

UPDATE: I haven't gotten a chance to watch the movie yet. It turned out there was no screening at Maponya Mall last Friday, it was just the film's release party. The director and stars of SWOP attended, as well as many other well known personalities like Nonhle Tema, Nzinga, Ashley Dowds, and Pabi Moloi (who has been everywhere with that Tymon dude). I witnessed a very humble moment when Kabelo "KB" Ngakane rocked up with his mother and sister, that was cool man.

Forthcoming Attractions: Fast & Furious, Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, and Monsters VS Aliens

Here is a treat for you. Below are theatrical trailers for movies that promise to be next year's biggest blockbusters. Check them out to wet your appetite whilst waiting.

Fast And Furious

The number one film I'm highly anticipating is the 4th instalment of The Fast And The Furious, titled Fast And Furious. The most exciting thing about it is that the 4 original cast members from the original movie i.e. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster, are all featured in this movie. Justin Lin also reprises his role as the director after his success with Tokyo Drift. You may remember that only Paul Walker was retained for the John Singleton-directed sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, starring alongside one of my favourites, Tyrese Gibson; and then an all-new cast was introduced in The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, the third one with an appearance from rapper Bow Wow. One other thing I'm looking forward to is seeing Laz Alonso, another actor who has impressed me with his work on such movies as Stomp The Yard, This Christmas and the latest Spike Lee film, Miracle At St. Anna.

Fast And Furious releases at cinemas nationwide in June 2009. Wouldn't it be great if we can get an exclusive advanced screening for our readers for this one? Watch the space.

Frost/Nixon

The second movie that has already been getting tounges wagging is Frost/Nixon. Starring Michael Sheen, Frank Langella, Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt, amongst others, the film has already been garnering some Oscar buzz because of the performances from Sheen and Langella on top of top notch directing from Ron Howard. I should be watching it in the second week of December, so I'll let you know if it's worth the buzz or not.
Frost/Nixon will be released on the 06th of February 2009 at cinemas throughout Mzansi.

Revolutionary Road

Next on the list is Revolutionary Road, the first move Leornado Di Caprio and Kate Winslet have worked together on since the multi-award winning Titanic. Based on a novel by Richard Yates and directed by one of the powerhouse directors, Sam Mendes, (known for producing the groundbreaking Thing We Lost In The Fire starring Benicio Del Toro and Halle Berry) Revolutionary Road looks at lives of a young couple trying to overcome thier personal challenges while attempting to raise their two children. It should be interesting to see how Winslet and Di Caprio fair in this film after their success with Titanic.

Revolutionary Road will open at cinemas on the 23rd of January 2008.

Monsters VS Aliens

Lastly, we have the animated motion picture Monsters VS Aliens, voiced by big names such as Seth Rogan, Reese Witherspoon and Keifer Sutherland, to name just a few. I'm not a big fan of animated movies, but have from time to time enjoyed pictures such as Ice Age 2, Horton Hears A Who and my young sister's favourite, Charlotte's Web.

Monsters VS Aliens opens at cinemas nationwide on the 03rd of April 2009.

UPDATE: For some reason I can't seem to succeed in uploading the trailers to this post. I shall be trying throughout the next few days. In the meantime, check out some of the pictures from the above movies.

Jozi and The Game rock at The Road to MAMA's

We are just a few days away from the very first ever MTV African Music Awards with Zain, taking place in Abuja, Nigeria on the 22nd of November 2008. Leading to the big event, MTV has been staging shows dubbed Road To MAMA's continentally since last Tuesday. On Thursday was our turn to experience the thrill after their stop in the DRC. On the Mzansi lineup was controversial U.S. rapper The Game, accompanied by our own sizzling hip hop outfit, Jozi; part South African and part American soul singer Goapele; local rockers The Parlotones and Cassette; as well as another local hip hop giant HHP.

Earlier in the day I attended the press conference paneled by, amongst others, MTV Networks Africa Senior Vice President and Managing Director Alex Okosi, who is always such a pleasure to talk with because of his humility and friendly nature; Zain's Marketing Director, Gill (sorry, can't remember her surname); and the artists Goapele, Les and Bongani from Jozi (with Ishmael making a late appearance), Khan from The Parlotones and Zambian volcalist, Danny. The headliner, The Game, was there too, only towards the end of the conference as he was dismally late. The press conference was started without him, 1 and a half hour after the scheduled time. What's even more sad is that once he stormed in, with an entourage of more than 10 people, everybody else on the panel seemed to have been forgotten by the media that posed questions.

I must say I was very impressed with the way he handled the questions though, speaking very eloquently. He touched on a few topics, amongst them mentioning his experience in the DRC, addressing why he brought such a large entourage, as well as his views on how people have lost the definition or meaning of rap beefs. The Game emphasised how important it is to surround yourself with friends and family, resulting in bringing his friends to share his African experience. He also made mention of his rivalry with Dr. Dre, uttering that he hasn't spoken or seen his "mentor" in over a year. He added, "Dre abondoned me. And if he were to ask me to appear on Detox, I would decline".

The array of subjects that The Game touched on also included his views on President Elect Barack Obama, congratulating and comparing his election triumph to that of Mandela's in 1994. Raising eyebrows in the room, he gleefully quipped, "I have killed and fought to survive", when he was asked about some of the challenges he has gone through in his life. He emphasised, however, that he is not proud of those experiences of his life.

Jozi also talked about their journey since bursting into the music scene about 3 years ago. Bongani seemed very emotional and lost for words whenever he spoke about his mother Brenda Fassie. With the recent passing of the legendary Miriam Makeba, many spoke about her achievements and how they are willing to honour her legacy. Alex Okosi excitedly announced, "We are planning on acknowledging Mama Africa during the awards show. It's a pity that this happened at this stage of the preparations because we would have loved to do more. But, there are more ceremonies to come in the future."

Later than evening, we were treated to just a taste of what's in store for the actual awards ceremony this coming Saturday. Danny opened the bill, followed by HHP, who always mesmerizes me with his live sets. Although all their performances were quite short, due to time constraints, my highlight for the night has to be Jozi, who have shown a great deal of growth since their introduction into the music scene. Their performances are always so energetic, thrilling and sincerely entertaining. They brought out a Nigerian group of dancers when their set began, exciting the audiences with their bold and interesting moves. It wasn't just their moves that left the crowds gasping for more, but their engaging interaction with their audience.

I need to utter my disappointment in the crowd's reaction to Goapele's performance. They seemed bored and detached from what was going on. However, I must also point out that it was mostly a hip hop crowd present and probably couldn't relate to the type of music she does. It was only at the end when she did her smash hit Closer, that the crowd seemed to warm up and sing along, but it was too late since that was her closing tune. The Parlotones and Cassette also gave it their all, sampling all their greatest hits we have come to love from both the groups. The Game, the headline act, also did the same. He rapped on songs that have made him popular, from his G-Unit days to the present. Although at times a bit cynical (like taking unwarranted stabs at his former G-Unit frontman 50 Cent), he held it down and gave a great performance. Apparently, me and a friend missed out on a great treat from a 7-year old Soweto boy who stole the show at the end of The Game's set, because we ran out just before the end to avoid the traffic out of the venue.

It was a great evening, filled with loads of entertanimnet. I didn't even chill at the VIP suites because all the fun was down there in front of the stage. The Road To Mama's continues in Zambia and Nigeria this week, before the spectacular finale planned for Nigeria on Saturday. Those that are lucky will get to experience what we did last Thursday and even more at the MTV African Music Awards with Zain on the 22nd of November 2008 in Nigeria. If you can't be there, don't worry, MTV has you covered as they will broadcast the show on MTVbase.

James Bond gets personal on Quantum Of Solace

Firstly, let me just say that I have never been to a press screening for a movie that was so packed. I even saw faces and met people I had never seen before at these screenings. That's just testimony that the new James Bond movie has been widely and greatly anticipated. Those that have seen it have pointed many fallacies, some even concluding it's the worst Bond movie they have ever seen.

I beg to differ though as I felt very entertained when I watched Quantum Of Solace this morning. Earlier this week I watched Flashbacks Of A Fool, another Daniel Craig film that releases in Cape Town this coming Friday, and was immensely amused by his performance and the feature in general. My review of that movie praised Daniel Craig for his display of flexibility, noting his vast contrast to his James Bond role in Casino Royale. Well, Quantum Of Solace proved that point again as his hardness, wit, charm, confidence (which can be construed as arrogance to many) and cander came across vividly.

Quantum Of Solace continues from where Casino Royale left off, but you won't lose the plot even if you didn't see the last instalment of the franchise. In an attempt not to give too much away here, I'll sum up Quantum Of Solace as a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, as Bond gathers old friends to uncover the truth to Vesper's backstabbers and ultmately the death of his love. In his quest for the truth, he has to outwit the CIA, the terrorists in his midst, and even his advisor M. And, he does this in old Bond fashion with the help of the latest technology.

Speaking of technology, I've always been fascinated with spycraft and espionage stories, so maybe that's another contributing factor to my enjoyment of the movie. And of course action junkies get loads of thrills as Bond does what he does best; the car chases, the fight sequences, all the nitty gritties. I could also sense that his character possessed some sensitivity and a bit softness, maybe because he was fighting for a more personal cause this time.

Overall, I liked Quantum Of Solace a great deal. Marc Forster did a great job with the directing. The clever humour will also get the better of you. Not to mention Mathieu Amalric's sterling portrayal of the villain. It also made me appreciate his own flexibility in his roles, remembering his excellent performance on The Diving Bell And The Butterfly as Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby. He played it with such precision and flair, but I digress.

Oh, and also, when I first listened to the theme song, sung by Alicia Keys and Jack White of The White Stripes, I didn't really feel it. However, when I listened to it in the context of the opening credits, it fell right into place. I really enjoyed it.

Quantum of Solace hits cinemas nationwide next week Wednesday, 19 November 2008.

Fun and awareness goes together at Levi’s® Rage for the Revolution Concert

This past Saturday saw an assortment of people enjoying themselves in a conscious and positive show dubbed Levi’s® Rage for the Revolution, spearheaded by the iconic clothing brand Levi’s®. The annual HIV/AIDS campaign withstood a few minor glitches, like the terrible rainy weather, and few technical fallaces, to a sounding success. And succeed it did as young people rejoiced and had fun whilst educating themselves about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and how to stay positive whether infected or affected. Helping spread the gospel were entertainers including Tidal Waves, Malaika, aKing, Ntando, L'Vovo, Flat Stanley, and DJ's Euphonik and Oskido.

It was entertainment galore as people of different cultures and backgrounds gathered to support an initiative that is very much needed in curbing this monster disease. Every musician that graced the stage had a message of support, sympathy, and compassion, whether relayed through their music or literal utterances. Da Les, the MC for the event, played his part too with his positive and encouraging words, even giving us a mini-performance during one of the breaks.

My highlight for the day has to be Tidal Waves (there were amazing with their authentic and smooth reggae sounds), L'Vovo (I finally got to understand why people go crazy over him and his music, he has such charm and appeal when he does his thing on stage), Malaika (wow, a world class performance from you, especially enjoyed Bongani doing Marvin Gaye's classic Sexual Healing, the brother can really sing - don't go solo though, both of you, you are fine just the way you are, LOL) and a group of brass and drum players that took the venue by storm during the breaks. It was so moving seeing the audience join these guys, singing and dancing to what was played through the horns. There were also a group of "magicians" taking turns amusing us with their tricks. The organisers need to be greatly commended and praised for that idea because we were never bored. If a musician was setting up for their performance, there was always something to occupy you, in terms of entertainment. I can't imagine what it would have been like during those glitches mentioned above if they didn't have such a contingency plan.

Overall, it was a fun-filled day. Not only about fun, but with a strong focus on awareness about a subject that has scarred the world over. Thank you Speakerscorner and Levi’s® for inviting us to share such an occasion. Melanie and Alison, you ladies are both stars shining bright (by the way, your son is so handsome Alison, and he is going to be great when he grows up, could gather from the pictures you showed me).

Continuing on the awareness trail, if you are having sexual relations, please go and get tested. It may sound like a cliche, but it's real and is the only truth, it's better knowing your status than dying in the dark. I don't mean to preach, but we have lost too many of our young potential heroes to HIV/AIDS, and we can only beat it by making a stand, just like Levi’s® is doing.

Lala Ngoxolo Mama Africa!

The world is reeling with the shocking news of the passing away of the legendary icon Miriam Makeba. Affectionately known to the world as Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba passed away early on Monday morning, shortly after performing in Italy. The first time I learnt about the sad news was yesterday as CNN ran their afternoon headlines.

The early and late evening local broadcast stations also ran the story yesterday, with a full coverage on Morning Live this morning. It is such a sad time for the music fraternity and the world at large. Mama Africa will always be remembered not only for her timeless music, but for her endless goodwill efforts throughout the world. I'm glad I had a brief glimpse into her life as a performer when I saw her doing her final public appearance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival last year. The packed to capacity venue proved her iconic and legendary status as thousands of music revellers sang along to every tune she belted out.

I also have a fond memory of her rare live DVD that was recorded in 1966 at Ben's in Stolkholm, which I presented to Bab' Themba Mkhize for his 50th birthday last year. He was very excited to get such a gift, even moreso because he is related to Mama Africa by law (Bab' Themba Mkhize's eldest son is married to Mama Africa's granddaughter and singer Zenzile).

Mama Africa, we will always treasure and cherish the legacy of universal love you have bestowed upon us. May God bless you with the peace you deserve as you become one of His Angels up above. Our condolenses goes to the Makeba family and relatives, as well as close friends.

Daniel Craig diversifies his roles very well

Many people are in greatly and widely anticipating Daniel Craig's latest flick as James Bond on Quantum Of Solace. Will he better his role from his first stint as 007 in Casino Royale? Well, before you get to find out, you will gleefully revel in a gem of another of his films that will be released this coming Friday, titled Flashbacks Of A Fool. I have just come back from watching it and was impressed with the amazing contrast to his character as James Bond.

Flashbacks Of A Fool revolves around an introspective look at an ageing Hollywood actor's life. Leading a meanless life, filled with women, drugs and all other trimmings of the famous and fortunate, Joe Scott, played by Daniel Craig, flashes back to his life as a teenager when all terribly went wrong. A tragic moment involving his teen best friend forces him to re-live a part of his life he would rather forget about, but his guilt proves too strong to dismiss a horrific and regrettable incident that ran him away from home. Realising that he would never be at peace unless his conscious is eased, he travels back home to face his demons.

Daniel Craig proves that he is an amazing actor with an amazing ability to tranform from the suave, commanding, and hard special agent to a sweet, sensitive and fault-laced gentleman. I was sold on him when I watched him do magic on Layer Cake, even before he was selected to play the latest Bond. His flawed character on Flashbacks Of A Fool in credible, evoking feelings of symphathy, compassion and understanding for his journey through life. The character development for the main charcaters here is also fantastic, resulting in a well-put-together story. Although there is a great deal of nudity in the film, it's done tastefully and greatly aligned to the characters and the story, therefore forgivable.

I was happy to see an appearance from rapper Eve playing opposite Daniel Craig, however small her part was. She played it quite well, I must say, she was very convincing in her character. Another impressive performance came from Mark Strong who I've just recently seen on Body Of Lies. His versatality shines through his role as Joe's agent who is brutally honest about his client being seen by the industry and the public as a washed up actor. Harry Eden, the young man who plays the young Joe, also sizzles in his performance.

This is an absolutely awesome film. It will make you laugh, and also make you cry; make you angry and also make you symphathise. It's really a pity that the rest of the country won't get to see it on the big screen as it only opens at cinemas in Cape Town this coming Friday, 14th November 2008. But hey, you can catch it on DVD when it is released in that format.
